MIAMI, Florida -- Florida International lived up to its name Friday night as Gergana Slavtcheva paced a Golden Panther attack that limited Stephen F. Austin to a 32.8% shooting percentage from the field. Slavtcheva led FIU with 19 points on seven of 13 shooting on the night.
Nothing seemed to go right for the Ladyjacks as SFA was 11 for 32 from the floor in the first half in falling behind by eleven at the half, 39-28. SFA was whistled for 25 fouls in the game, while FIU was whistled 11 times. The Golden Panthers went to the free throw line 30 times, connecting on 24 of those attempts, while SFA went 9 of 12 at the stripe.
FIU also dominated the glass outrebounding the Ladyjacks 59-30 in the game. Cheryl Moody chalked up a double-double for the Panthers with her 18-point, 19-rebound effort against SFA. Nine of Moody's 19 rebounds were offensive rebounds.
LaTisha Prater was one of the bright spots for the Ladyjacks as she led SFA with 19-points on an 8 of 16 shooting night. Prater also led the Ladyjacks on the boards with 10 rebounds, racking up the third double-double of her Ladyjack career. Senior Chaquita Dilworth was the only other Ladyjack in double figures as she added 12 points on the night.
For the game, SFA was 22-67 from the floor (.328), while connecting on four of 16 three-point attempts (.250). FIU was only 24-63 for the night (.364), and only two of eight on three-point tries (.250).
SFA (0-1) returns home and will spend the next two weeks preparing for the Kroger Thanksgiving Classic in Auburn, Alabama. The next action for the Ladyjacks will be Nov. 23 as they take on Charleston Southern in the opening round match-up.
Florida International (1-0) moves on to the second round of the Women's Preseason NIT, and will take on the winner of the Connecticut-Fairfield game.
