Alex Meng will be entering his eighth season as a part of the SFA softball coaching staff. He spent his first four years working directly with the Ladyjacks as a student assistant.
Meng has worked the last three seasons as a full-time assistant coach and served as the team[apos]s hitting coach. The 2014 season, saw three different Ladyjacks hit eight home runs. He guided first baseman Shalie Day to earn All-Southland Conference First Team honors after hitting .336 on the year with eight homers and 41 RBI. Freshmen Brittany Lewis and Katilyn Standley also hit eight homers with Lewis leading the team with 44 RBI.
The son of a high school softball coach and younger brother of former Ladyjack Malina Meng, he was an influential part of the best four-year run in program history, a run that included a 2008 Southland Conference Tournament title and trip to the NCAA Tournament, as well as SFA[apos]s first-ever conference title in 2010.
Meng served as first base coach in 2009 and 2010, when he was tutored by hitting coach Craig Snider, who quickly helped turn one of the Southland[apos]s worst offenses into one of the best in a short amount of time. In just one year[apos]s time, the Ladyjacks finished the 2008 season ranked in the top three in the SLC in 15 offensive categories, including leading the league in runs scored (269), hits (443), runs batted in (239), triples (15), total bases (673), total plate appearances (1,861), at-bats (1,618), walks (163) and sacrifice bunts (49).
Meng oversees field maintenance at SFA Field. The Shepherd, Texas, native also has an amplified role in recruiting as well as the implementation of camps.
Meng graduated in the spring of 2011 from Stephen F. Austin with a bachelor[apos]s of science degree in kinesiology and a minor in biology. He is currently pursuing a master[apos]s degree in kinesiology at SFA. Meng married assistant track & field and cross country coach Marie Flores this summer. The Mengs reside in Nacogdoches.
