NACOGDOCHES, Texas- Stephen F. Austin lost to North Texas 3-1 on Friday. The Ladyjacks won the second set 28-26 and lost the first and third by two points apiece before the Mean Green took the fourth set 25-17.
SFA moved in front early with two UNT attack errors during Katherine Holtman's serve for a 6-4 lead, but the Mean Green answered to go ahead 8-7. After a service error tied the set, Kyanna Creecy served an ace, and SFA won seven of eight rallies overall, with Caroline Kahle and Holtman combining for five kills during the stretch to build a 14-9 lead. UNT worked back to tie the set at 17-17 on Lillian Croshaw's kill and later took a 20-19 lead on Sidney Soria's ace, but SFA answered with kills from Kahle, Holtman and Avery Koonsen to force ties at 20, 23, 24 and 25. The Mean Green took the final two points after the 25-25 tie, getting Jocelyn Jourdan's kill and an SFA attack error to win the opening set 27-25.
After an early exchange to 5-5, UNT scored six of the next seven points, using kills by Reagan Bedell and Loredana Fouonji to move in front 11-6. SFA cut the gap to 13-11 as Kahle had a kill, Koonsen and Jordan Henderson combined on a block, and Henderson added a solo block. The Mean Green still led 23-21 late, but a service error and a Creecy block tied the set before Creecy's kill put SFA ahead 24-23. After UNT moved back in front 25-24 and later tied it at 26-26, SFA took the final two points on a Jocelyn Jourdan attack error and a Henderson kill to close the set 28-26.
SFA opened the third set with six straight points on Madi Zorn's serve, getting a Henderson kill, a Zorn ace and four UNT errors to go ahead 6-0. The Mean Green worked back from a 10-7 deficit with five straight points on Addison Achilles' serve, taking a 12-10 lead before SFA tied it at 12-12 on a Creecy kill and a UNT attack error. After the Mean Green moved ahead 16-14, SFA pulled even on a Holtman kill and later went in front 19-17 behind a Holtman kill and consecutive Koonsen kills. SFA reached set point at 24-22 after a Molly Cravens kill, a Cravens-Zorn block and a UNT service error, but the Mean Green scored the final four points, closing the set 26-24 on kills by Jocelyn Jourdan, Reagan Bedell and Loredana Fouonji and an SFA attack error.
The fourth set stayed close early, with Henderson, Zorn, Koonsen and Kahle recording kills as SFA remained within 8-7, and Henderson's second kill later made it 10-8.
