Lumberjacks Drop Doubleheader to McNeese

LAKE CHARLES, La.- The Stephen F. Austin softball team wrapped their series against the McNeese Cowgirls with a Saturday afternoon doubleheader.
Game 1: McNeese 11, SFA 10
SFA got the scoring started early when Morgan Wright reached on a fielder's choice which scored Jamie Varga from third. Adelyn Becerra scored from second after a throwing error by the McNeese pitcher, 2-0. McNeese took the lead in the bottom of the second with four runs, 4-2. The Cowgirls tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the fourth to extend their lead to 7-2. The Jacks responded in the top of the fifth after Becerra scored on a wild pitch and then Sammy Hagman hit a sacrifice fly to left field, 7-4. McNeese added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth, 9-4. SFA responded in a big way in the sixth inning after Malia Jones drew a leadoff walk and then Lilly Bean crushed a two-run homerun to left center to cut the deficit to three, 9-6. Later in the inning, Becerra hit a single then a defensive error allowed Varga to score, 9-7. Wright followed that up with an RBI single to center field, 9-8. Kaylee Paul then stepped up to the plate with runners on second and third and dropped a two-RBI single into center to give the Jacks the lead, 10-9. McNeese responded with their own two-run homerun in the bottom of the sixth and then slammed the door on a Jacks potential comeback in the top of the seventh to secure an 11-10 victory.
Game 2: McNeese 13, SFA 8
The Jacks got on the board early in game two as well after Vance and Becerra drew walks to put two runners on for Paul who hit a double to third base, 2-0. In the second, Hagman and Varga hit back-to-back singles then Becerra hit a two-RBI single to left field to double the Jacks' lead, 4-0. Paul hit a leadoff single in the third then Malia Jones blasted a two-run homerun over the scoreboard in left center, 6-0. McNeese got back quickly with a four-run bottom of the third, 6-4. The Cowgirls added one in the bottom of the fourth before their offense exploded with eight runs in the bottom of the fifth, 13-6. In the top of the seventh, Wright drew a walk before Kayden Frazier blasted her first collegiate homerun to left center to score the final runs of the game, 13-8.
POSTGAME NOTES
• In game one, three Jacks had multi hit days with Lilly Bean leading the team with three.
• Three Jacks also recorded two RBIs in game one.
• Nine of SFA's hits in game two were hit by eight different players.
• Kaylee Paul led the team by going 2-2 in game two.
• Four Jacks recorded two RBIs in game two.
UP NEXT
SFA will return home to Nacogdoches for their final SLC regular season series against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. This Senior Weekend series will begin with a single game at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, April 24 and will wrap up with a doubleheader at 1:00 and 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 25.
