NACOGDOCHES, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin Volleyball program finished off the first SFA Tournament against a long-term rival, Sam Houston.
This Battle of the Piney Woods held the anticipation of a championship game especially on the court. Sam Houston held a slim 6-3 lead early in the first set. Later, SFA tied the set up at 11 before SHSU went on a 4-0 run to retake the lead, 15-11. With the Bearkats at set point, the 'Jacks rattled off three straight points to go to extras. SFA won three points and finished off a 28-26 first set victory with an ace from Cambry Saul.
The second set was just as close as neither team held more than a three-point lead. This set featured 12 ties and four lead changes, but the Bearkats came out on top 26-24 to tie the match at one.
SFA held the largest lead of the third set at five points, 21-16, but SHSU went on 7-1 spurt to take a 23-22 lead. Both teams continued to trade points until the Bearkats won the final three points of the set and won the third set by a score of 31-29. The third set featured 15 ties and 11 lead changes.
The fourth set followed the same trend as the previous two and the second set where neither team held more than a three-point lead to entire set. Back-to-back kills from Lauren Malone secured the 27-25 fourth set victory and the Bearkats won the match 3-1.
