4/6/2025 7:48:00 PM | Baseball
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks (9-22, 2-12 SLC) lost the second game of their three-game series to the Texas A&M Islanders (12-21, 4-10 SLC) this evening, 8-5, in 16 innings.
Neither team scored in the first inning, as 'Jacks starter Dylan Mulcahy started the game strong. In the bottom of the second, the Lumberjacks would strike first. Dante Turgeon led off the inning with a single and would score one batter later as Kevin Duran smoked a double to center field, putting the Lumberjacks up 1-0.
The score remained the same through the fifth inning, as Mulcahy continued to keep the Islander bats off balance. In the top of the sixth, Texas A&M Corpus Christi took their first lead of the game courtesy of a two-run home run, putting the Islanders up 2-1.
The 'Jacks responded quickly, however, as Julian Swift smoked his first home run of the year in the bottom of the sixth, tying the game at 2. Later in the inning, Kevin Duran singled and advanced to third on a steal and an error, setting the stage for Ethan Adkisson. Adkisson would come through, singling to right field to score Duran and put the Lumberjacks up 3-2.
Both teams went scoreless in the seventh, but the Islanders would regain the lead in the top of the eighth with three runs, making the score 5-3 in favor of them. The lumberjacks did not go away quietly, though. Julian Swift led off the bottom half of the inning with a single and Kevin Duran worked a one-out walk, putting runners at first and second with one out. Ethan Adkisson continued his big day with a single into right, scoring Swift. Cermodrick Bland followed with a perfectly executed bunt down the first base line and Kevin Duran would beat the throw home to tie the game at 5 heading into the ninth inning.
In the ninth, the Lumberjacks kept the Islanders off the board thanks to some good work from Hayden Tronson and Kadin Munson. Unfortunately, the Lumberjacks weren't able to bring home the winning run in the bottom of the ninth, and the game headed to extra innings tied at 5.
The Islanders went down in order in the tenth, and despite getting runners to first and second with one out, the Lumberjacks couldn't bring home a run. In the top of the eleventh, Jonathan Valdez pitched his second straight scoreless inning, keeping the game tied. In the bottom half of the inning, Josh Ibe worked a one-out walk, but the Lumberjacks were once again kept off the scoreboard.
The score stayed the same for three more innings, as neither team would come close to breaking the tie. Jonathan Valdez continued to keep the 'Jacks in it, throwing five innings without giving up a run. In the 16th inning, however, the Islanders would finally break through, scoring three runs on five hits to go up 8-5. Despite loading the bases with two outs, the Lumberjacks wouldn't score any runs and would lose the 16-inning marathon, 8-5.
Reid Bowyer (1-2) took the loss, while Cam Soliz (1-3) won his first game of the year.
