Ladyjacks Split First Day at Jaguar Invitational

MOBILE, Ala.- Stephen F. Austin defeated Jackson State in the first game of the Jaguar Invitational, but were defeated by host South Alabama in the 'Jacks second game of the day.
Game 1
Jackson State scored the first point of the game, but then SFA went on a 6-0 run. Points were traded back and forth until SFA went on another six point spurt to extend the 'Jacks lead to 18-6. Jackson State went on a small three-point run late in the set, but ultimately the Ladyjacks won the first set 25-15. The second set was much closer, neither team had more than a five point lead until the 'Jacks broke through and scored five points in a row to grow their lead to nine, 24-15. Ielan Bradley finished off the second set for SFA. Jackson State did not go down without a fight in the third set as they held a four point lead on multiple occasions. SFA went on a nine-point scoring run and took a five point lead, 19-14. The Tigers fought their way back before losing the final set 25-20.
SFA led Jackson State in points (67-39), kills (51-30), aces (6-1), blocks (10-8), assists (41-28), digs (50-35), and hitting percentage (.337-.165). Bradley led the team with 10 kills, followed by Camryn Hill who had nine and was one kill off of a double-double. Hill led the team with 12 digs, followed by Ariana Pagan who recorded 11. Izabella Ortiz led the team with seven blocks and recorded eight kills. Maddy Bourque led the 'Jacks with 22 assists, followed by Jayden Flynn with 14. Freshman Tanishua Joseph recorded seven kills and three blocks in her collegiate debut.
Game 2
The day ended with a matchup against the host Jaguars of South Alabama. The first set was back and forth, but four separate three-point runs by the Jags pushed them to a 25-18 first set victory. The three-point runs continued to be a theme in the second set as each team had one early on in the set. However, the Jags were able to spring ahead with two four-point runs and a six-point run as they ran away with set two by a score of 25-16. Early on in the third set SFA was down 4-2, but then went on a five-point spurt to take the lead, 7-4. Each team had two three-point runs in this set, but with that early five-point run and another four-point run later in the set the 'Jacks came away with a 28-26 set three victory. In the fourth set, each team went on several three-point mini runs, but then points were traded back and forth until South Alabama scored the final four points to secure the win.
Four Ladyjacks recorded double-digit kills; Pagan and Hill each had 11, while Bradley and Ortiz had 10. Pagan and Hill recorded their first double-doubles of the season with 12 and 11 digs respectively. Joseph also finished with seven kills. Haley Hoang led the team with 16 digs. Flynn recorded 20 assists, followed by Bourque with 17. Ortiz and Bradley led the team with seven blocks, which is a career-high for Bradley.
SFA will finish their time at the Jaguar Invitational tomorrow, Saturday, August 26th at 12:30 p.m. as they face off against Tulane.
