RECAP: Ladyjacks Axe Bearkats in Four

HUNTSVILLE, Texas- Stephen F. Austin defeated Sam Houston 3-1 on Tuesday at Johnson Coliseum. SFA dropped the opening set 16-25 before winning the next three 25-19, 25-19, and 25-23.
The Bearkats put SFA in a 9-4 hole early. SFA answered with four straight points, getting kills from Molly Cravens and Caroline Kahle before two attack errors by the Bearkats cut the deficit to 9-8. The Bearkats rebuilt the margin with a run that included kills by Butler, Brooks, and Monson, moving ahead 18-10, and later pushed the lead to 22-11. SFA got late points from Katherine Holtman, a Cambry Saul ace, and two Bearkats attack errors to reach 23-16, but the Bearkats took the final two points to close the set 25-16.
The second set traded points through 6-6 before Holtman put SFA back in front, and a Kyanna Creecy-Holtman block plus a Kennedy Jones kill helped stretch the lead to 9-6. SFA stayed ahead 12-8 on another Jones kill and 14-11 on Cravens' kill, but the Bearkats scored two straight to get within 14-13. SFA answered with consecutive block-assisted points from Holtman and Jordan Henderson to make it 16-13, then pushed a late 18-16 edge to 21-16 behind a Bearkats service error and blocks involving Creecy, Cravens, and Kahle. SFA reached set point at 24-18 on back-to-back Bearkat attack errors and closed the set 25-19 on Holtman's kill from Izzy Orton.
The Bearkats moved in front 5-1 in the third set before SFA answered with five straight points, including a Henderson kill, a Holtman kill, an Orton ace, and a Kahle kill, to go ahead 6-5. SFA later built a 10-6 lead, but the Bearkats came back to tie it at 10-10 with consecutive service aces. The set stayed tight from there, with SFA getting kills from Jones, Creecy, Kahle, and Holtman before the Bearkats pulled even at 19-19. Holtman's kill gave SFA a 20-19 lead, and she served the final five points, including her own ace, two Jones kills, and a Creecy kill to close the set 25-19.
The Bearkats opened the fourth set with three straight kills for a 3-0 lead, and SFA worked back to 11-11 behind a Jones kill and consecutive Bearkats attack errors. The Bearkats moved back ahead 18-14, then stretched it to 19-15, but Avery Koonsen recorded three straight kills before a bad set tied the set at 19-19. The teams traded points to 22-22 before Lara Gilardi put down consecutive kills to give SFA a 23-22 lead. After the Bearkats tied it at 23-23 on a service error, a bad set gave SFA set point, and Kahle finished the 25-23 set with a kill from Orton.
