TULSA, OK - Stephen F. Austin defeated Oral Roberts 4-2 in the 12th inning to secure the series win for the Lumberjacks. SFA improves to 5-6 and ORU falls to 7-4.
The Golden Eagles scored the first runs of the day in the second inning when they led off the bottom half with a solo home run. A single and a couple of groundouts later, they tagged on a second run with a RBI infield single. That would end up being the only two runs scored by either team in the first six innings.
Cade Stapleton started on the bump for SFA and he pitched the first six innings allowing only the two runs priorly mentioned, stuck out five, and didn't allow a single walk. The Lumberjack bats, on the other hand, were pretty quiet in the early going, only recording one hit and four walks.
That all changed in the top of the seventh inning, when Cody Fleischer and Sam Adams led off the inning with back-to-back singles. That allowed Alex Rodgers to drive in Fleischer with a sacrifice fly to right field, his 14th RBI of the season. After seven innings, the score remained 2-1 Golden Eagles.
Oral Roberts took the game into the ninth inning, ready to close out the game and even the series. That was until Barrett Rose stepped into the plate as a pinch-hitter and launched a monster home run down the right-field line off a hanging curveball to tie the game at 2-2 and take the game into extra innings.
The Lumberjacks had chances to take the lead in both the 10th and the 11th inning as they got two hits in each inning but were unable to put anything together to bring in any runs. But they were finally able to put together the pieces in the top of the 12th when Scout Sanders led off the inning getting hit by a pitch and Peyton Parker followed that with an infield single, putting runners on first and second with no outs. Tom Biggs then laid down a sac bunt to the pitcher, moving the runners to second and third with one out. The Golden Eagles were able to bounce back with a strikeout, putting the 'Jacks in danger of leaving the runners stranded for a third straight inning. But then Cole Hill decided it was time to end the game, and roped a single to left field scoring Sanders and Parker, giving SFA the 4-2 lead.
The bottom half of the inning was anything but stress-free for the Lumberjacks as the last three outs kept the fans on the edge of their seats. Benny Emmons III first came into relief in the 11th and remained on the mound going into the 12th. The first two batters for Oral Roberts were able to get a hit as runners were placed on first and third. The next batter then laid down a bunt down the third-base line and was able to beat out the throw to first from Emmons. However, as Emmons made the throw to first, the runner from third dashed for home and, supposedly, beat out the throw from first making him safe at home. The Lumberjacks then called a review from the umpires to challenge the call at home. After review, the call was changed and the runner was out at home, keeping the score 4-2 with out and runners at first and second. After a walked batter, Emmons threw a wild pitch to the backstop and as the runner from third was attempting to score, Hunter Prescher got a perfect ricochet and was able to tag out the runner before scoring. The Golden Eagles called for a challenge and after a second lengthy review of the inning, the call of out at home stood. The 'Jacks decided to intentionally walk the hitter to keep the bases load and have a force out at any base to get the last out. With the final Golden Eagle up to bat with a full count, Emmons was able to get the strike out and get the win for the Lumberjacks.
Rodgers and Parker both went 2-for-5 on the day and Rose and Hill recorded the biggest hits of the game. The SFA pitching staff held their own on the mound today, not allowing any runs after the second inning, striking out ten, and only allowing two walks in 12 innings.
