SFA Athletics is unveiling a new series called My Lumberjack Life. With the 2019-20 season of competition cut short, this series is an opportunity for our athletes to share how they've been dealing with the recent global events, and how they are spending their time away from campus and the sport they play.
I still remember every moment like it happened yesterday. It was a Thursday when we got a text from our coaches cancelling practice for the day. We played the next day... all of us were confused.
"What is going on...we play tomorrow", I remember thinking.
Confusion just took over the room. Later that day our coaches called us together we were supposed to have a crawfish team dinner after practice, so we came to the field. I will never forget the look my coach had on her face... I knew something was coming, but I tried to stay positive. We got in the locker room everyone sat down... Not even two minutes had passed and I had a strong feeling we were going to get some bad news.
"Ladies, we all love you and are proud of you".
After that moment my mind just went into shock, I could not believe the words that were being said.
"As of right now we are suspended, by March 30 we hope that everything will go back to normal". I just sat there on the floor shocked and staring off into the air. I looked at my coach and could see the heartbreak on her face; it hurt me so much just to see her broken like that. While I was leaving the meeting I was still in denial, "we are going to have games still, let this pass over and it will be softball again".
"Our season is not done; we are just taking a break", I thought.
We got back and food was ready for all of us. There was music playing in the background, and the smell of fresh crawfish in the air. I knew this is where my heart was. This is what we needed after the news.
Two days later, I woke up to my phone going off. I did not know what was going on but everyone on the team was just texting back and forth. Little did I know this was the moment everything will change.
The text came through. "Our season has come to an end. The outbreak is growing and NCAA has cancelled all of spring sports".
I read that line 20 times not believing it. My heart just dropped, and I felt like I was in a nightmare. How could this be, how could someone just take what is ours? We have worked so hard for this season, we've shed blood, sweat and tears, and after all that, someone could just take it away. I did not understand how this was over in a blink of an eye. I dropped my phone and just burst into tears.
Being a senior and not even knowing that your season would end like that is something that I wish no one will feel. Working your whole life for something you are so passionate hurts so bad. Having this team when times were hard was truly amazing. These girls are my sisters, I got to watch them grow and gain the confidence I knew they had.
Never take anything for granted.
Also go hard all the time because you never know what will happen.
I can honestly say this is home. I have never felt something so strong as much as I do for this program, school and the staff. They are all family and I enjoy being around all of them. I will always bleed purple.
