Ladyjacks claim second Southland series sweep of 2019 after pounding out 15 hits
SAN ANTONIO – By using another dominant pitching performance as well as its highest number of hits in a Southland Conference contest this season, the SFA softball team completed the first half of its longest stretch of true road games this season with another victory.
Senior Emily Wolfe led a 15-hit assault by delivering a game-high three hits, six Ladyjacks finished with multiple hits and SFA put the finishing touches on its second Southland Conference series sweep of the season by scoring a 7-0 shutout win over Incarnate Word Saturday afternoon at H-E-B Field.
SFA turned in its second-straight shutout victory over the Cardinals thanks to a complete game effort by freshman pitcher Kassidy Wilbur. The first-year star struck out 10 to help SFA complete its eighth shutout win of the season and its fourth in Southland action this season.
SCORING SUMMARY
T1 | Getting on the board early, the Ladyjacks took a 1-0 lead in the top of the opening inning after a leadoff walk led to a single down the left field line by senior third baseman Lauren Becker. After a fielder's choice and a hit-by-pitch, Becker scored an unearned run on a two-out Cardinal error.
T3 | With Wilbur keeping the Cardinals' bats at bay through the first two frames, the Ladyjacks made use of some one-out offense to pad their lead. Kendzior was hit with another pitch before Gregory drilled a double to center to put runners at second and third. Brittany Crawford did the rest, punching a two-run single to center to extend the visitors' lead to 3-0.
T5 | Four of the Ladyjacks' 15 hits came in the top of the fifth and helped the visitors increase their lead. Back-to-back doubles by Madison Clements and Wolfe made matters 4-0.
T6 | SFA upped its lead to five without the benefit of a hit. Alex Hedspith took first after getting hit by a pitch with one out and swiped second to get into scoring position. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, Hedspeth raced home on a sacrifice bunt by Kendzior to make matters 5-0.
T7 | Four more hits in the Ladyjacks' final set of at-bats helped the visitors put their final two runs of the game on the board. Wolfe and Novegil came up with consecutive one-out singles before Becker took a four-pitch walk to load the bases. Margarita Corona's first and only hit of the game was an RBI single that pushed Wolfe home and after an Incarnate Word pitching change Hedspeth drove in the Ladyjacks' final run by reaching a fielder's choice that scored Novegil.
AT THE DISH
• SFA's 15-hit assault on the Cardinals featured multi-hit outing by six players. No Ladyjack put forth more base knocks than Wolfe who went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
• Becker, Clements, Crawford, Gregory and Novegil each finished with a pair of hits while Crawford drove in a pair of runs.
• For the Cardinals, who lost their 10th-straight contest, Hoffman finished with two of her squad's four hits in the series finale.
INSIDE THE CIRCLE
• Kassidy Wilbur continued to carve up the Cardinals, fanning 10 batters in a complete-game effort that pushed her record to 15-11.
• The freshman allowed just four hits while also walking four and hitting one batter. Wilbur worked her way out of a pair of two-out, bases-loaded jams. The first of those came in the third when she got Emily Castro to bounce into an inning-ending groundout to second. In the home half of the fourth, Wilbur punched put Villan looking on six pitches.
• Renee Hoffman (1-14) suffered the loss for the Cardinals, working 6 1/3 innings and giving up all 15 of the Ladyjacks' hits. Hoffman struck out a pair but those punchouts were offset by three walks and four hit batters.
POSTGAME QUOTES | SFA head coach Nicole Dickson
On the tone of the series and Kassidy Wilbur's performance inside the circle | "My dugout was awesome this entire series as every one of our players proved they were all in. On the mound, Kassidy Wilbur had to adjust to a tight zone and battled through some tough innings. At the end of the day, she was able to put forth another solid outing with 10 strikeouts."
On how SFA's offense performed | "Triniti Kendzior was a tough out today and found ways to get on base multiple times. Up and down the lineup we were able to get good hits at the right time."
On the week as a whole | "Our team was consistent this week and did exactly what we asked of them. Winning four games in a row on the road is tough and I'm proud we were able to do that this week. We adapted well to the rain delay today and our attitude was great throughout the week."
ON DECK
The Ladyjacks will now enjoy a much needed week-long break from game action next week without a midweek affair. Next weekend, SFA will continue its road trip at Abilene Christian, taking on the Wildcats in a three-game Southland series Friday and Saturday, April 19-20.
