Ladyjacks Earn Second-Straight Shutout, Win Fourth Consecutive Wednesday

Junior Ashley Kriesel fans 11 batters, senior Margarita Corona goes 3-for-3 with three-run shot for SFA’s first homer of season
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Opening up the home portion of its schedule, the SFA softball team continued where it left off over the weekend by earning its second-straight shutout and fourth consecutive win. The Ladyjacks improved to 5-1 on the young season with a 4-0 victory over visiting Sun Belt Conference foe Louisiana-Monroe (1-5) late Wednesday afternoon at the SFA Softball Field.
Junior right-handed Galveston College transfer Ashley Kriesel made her second start in a SFA uniform and wrung up 11 Warhawk batters inside the circle as she collected her first complete game win. Senior first baseman Margarita Corona knocked out the Ladyjacks' first long ball of the season when she clobbered a three-run shot over the center field fence in the opening inning, one of nine SFA hits in the contest.
"It's a really good win," head coach Nicole Dickson said after the game. "I thought Ashley (Kriesel) did a really good job of handling their offense, they (ULM) return a lot of players that have given us fits over the last couple years. Sydney McKay is a phenomenal leadoff hitter for ULM, we were able to manage her today which I'm really excited about. I was also really excited to see (Margarita) Corona come out and go 3-for-3, swing the bat well with great at bats and hunt pitches. Overall it was a good win against a good team."
After singles by sophomore second baseman Bryana Novegil and redshirt sophomore Tyler Junior College transfer left fielder Tommi Goodman in the top of the first, Corona went yard on a one-out, full-count pitch to give the Ladyjacks a 3-0 lead that they would not relinquish.
With Kriesel striking out four of the first six batters she faced, SFA tacked on another run in the bottom of the second. Freshman catcher Mackenzie Bennett singled to leadoff the frame, before freshman designated player Kassidy Wilbur hit a single of her own and senior shortstop Emily Wolfe was successful on a sacrifice bunt. Novegil was able to reach on a fielder's choice when junior Des Moines Area Community College transfer pinch runner Bailey Richards evaded being thrown out at home for the Ladyjacks' fourth run of the afternoon.
The Warhawks had their best chance to get on the board in the top of the fourth when a pair of singles and a hit by pitch loaded the bases. However, with two outs already, Kriesel forced a popup to get out of the inning without any damage.
Kriesel (1-1) retired the last seven batters and allowed only five hits on the day in 27 total batters faced. Corona went 3-for-3 in the game with three RBI and a run scored, while Wilbur finished 2-for-3 and Goodman 1-for-2 with a run.
ULM right-handed starter Karly Taranto (0-1) took the loss after striking out two but giving up four earned runs in the first inning of action. Reliever Jessie Watts tossed three innings and recorded a pair of strikeouts as Murphy Williams completed the final two innings of the game and posted a strikeout. The Warhawks' second baseman Jaclyn Kresta was 1-for-2 at the plate and was hit by a pitch.
"I thought we were able to work on some things today," continued coach Dickson. "We were able to put down some bunts and we played with the lineup a little bit, which we will probably still do this weekend. We did hit the ball hard right at people, I thought (Lindsay) Gregory and (Brittany) Crawford hit really hard but sometimes it's hard to tell because we were putting the ball in play but not scoring. I was very pleased with Emily Wolfe and Gregory, I thought they did a great job on defense today. We're going to have to play like that this weekend in every single game."
