SFA remains unbeaten across past 18 matches with Northwestern State
NATCHITOCHES, La. -- Katelyn Termini netted a crucial game-winning goal in the 68th minute of Friday's rivalry matchup at Northwestern State, lifting the visiting Ladyjacks to a 1-0 victory and improving the team's season record to 3-3 overall (1-0 Southland). The hard-earned result also marked the third straight season in which the 'Jacks have opened the conference slate with a win over Northwestern State, and continues an 18-match unbeaten streak against the Demons that dates back to 2002.
"Heck of a game for us tonight", said SFA head coach Wally Crittenden. "Every time we come here it is a battle. Two years ago we had to score in a very similar type moment, whereas tonight it was a big time goal by Termini. It may have been one of our best connections in the attack, Termini hit it very well to give us that goal. I'll tell you though, with the energy and preparation that team put into this game it was a great, great test for our kids."
After the teams battled to a scoreless first half and carried that theme through to the second frame, sophomore Elise Davis took a breakaway down the left side of the field. A quick redirect into the center of the field found Termini, who collected the feed, fended off her attacker with a neat side step and buried the strike from 15 yards out. The goal was the second of the season for Termini, and Davis' assist marked her first point as a member of the purple and white.
"Anytime you get a win in league play its important, because it goes a long way down the stretch to put you in position to play in the postseason", explained Crittenden. "At the end of the day, we're going to be accountable, we're going to define ourselves within our pursuit and performance in this outcome, and we'll look to improve on what we need to moving forward."
For the second straight week, SFA's defense was tasked with facing the nation's top scoring offense, having held the nation's leaders Southern Miss off the scoreboard last Friday. Northwestern State entered the matchup scoring 3.57 goals per game, but found no easy sledding against SFA's stalwarts. Making her first start for SFA in her home state of Louisiana, redshirt-freshman Madeline Talbot was efficient and decisive in goal for the 'Jacks, shutting out the Lady Demons with numerous collections, punch outs and saves. She stopped six shots in total and improves to 2-0-0 on the season.
"There was one big moment for Maddie, for sure", added Crittenden. "She did a good job from a distribution standpoint, she dealt with what she would be expected to deal with at a very high level. There was one rally great point-blank save after she gave up a rebound she got up quickly to make the save. Overall I thought from an overall presence in goal it was going to take something very special to beat her tonight. Just a good solid performance from her tonight."
"From a defensive standpoint, I thought we were able to absorb pressure and direct it towards areas on the field that would force them to try these very difficult diagonals and penetrating balls", said Crittenden. "I thought our defense did a good job absorbing that pressure and forcing shots form areas that were advantageous for our goalkeeper, certainly Maddie had a few saves but most of those shots didn't really pose a challenge. Overall I thought we did a good job not overextending and trying to meet them too high up the field."
Next up for SFA is a pair of road contests at Houston Baptist on Friday and down at Texas A&M Corpus-Christi on Sunday.
