NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin women's soccer team will head into the thick of the Southland Conference schedule in the coming weeks, and with league play already underway, the 'Jacks will hit the road for a pair of conference matches this weekend. SFA first travels to Houston to face Houston Baptist (3-5, 1-0 SLC) at 7 p.m on Friday, before heading south for a Sunday matinee with the Islanders of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (3-2-1, 0-0 SLC) at 1 p.m.
"Both of them good teams", said Crittenden of his weekend opponents. "Pretty excited about the fields were going to play on. HBU has a good turf very similar to ours, and A&M Corpus, we've played a lot of good games on that field, we've won on that field both in conference tournament play and in league play, so we're excited about that. We're going to get two very organized, well-coached teams that will have good athletic players that will have good intensity and good commitment."
At 3-3 overall and 1-0 in Southland conference play following a win over Northwestern State last Friday, the 'Jacks will face a pair of opponents they have historically gotten the better of. SFA owns a 7-3 advantage over the Huskies in that all-time series, and is unbeaten in five matchups against the Islanders as well. Friday's match against the Huskies will be live streamed on Youtube, with live stats available for the game as well. Sundays game is available for viewing through the Islander's website or via the link at the top of this page.
Heading into the weekend's matches, the Ladyjacks continue to create an identity for themselves after a non-conference slate that left more questions than answers. Offensively, the 'Jacks are still looking to find their stride with a roster full of capable attackers, having tallied four goals in the three wins so far this season. Sophomore Katelyn Termini netted the golden goal in last Friday's victory, her second winning tally of the season and fourth of her young career.
On the defensive side of the ball, the 'Jacks have been dominant against some opponents and struggled against others, namely those opponents who are ranked or receiving votes to be so. In games against non-ranked opponents, however, the 'Jacks have notched three shutouts and were halfway to a fourth in the game against Southern Miss before that contest was canceled. Both the Southern Miss and Northwestern State matches featured the nation's top scoring offense facing off against the 'Jacks, and in both instances the 'Jacks were stalwart. Madeline Talbot has thrived in her return between the sticks, as the redshirt freshman posted a six-save clean sheet in Friday's win and was well on her way to shutting out Southern Miss earlier this month as well.
"At the end of the day, I don't define our team by games that we lose; I'm not going to define our team by games that we win either", added Crittenden. "We're going to define our team by our pursuit of our desired outcomes and how we prepare to start and finish games. What I'm looking for Friday for us to start a little better, but certainty if we can finish Friday like we did at Northwestern State that will be good too.
WE KNOW A THING OR TWO ABOUT WINNING
SFA's marks of 157 wins and a .732 winning percentage heading into the 2018 season are both conference-bests by a healthy margin.
THE CENTURY MARK
SFA head coach WALLY CRITTENDEN coached his 100thgame at the helm of SFA soccer in the season opener against LSU-Shreveport. His career marks of 68 wins and 105 games coached are both program records.
HOUSTON…A HOME AWAY FROM HOME
SFA has compiled a perfect 4-0 record in away games played against the Huskies, amassing an 11-3 scoring edge in those contests.
THOU SHALL NOT SCORE
The Ladyjacks notched a shutout in the victory over Northwestern State, and now have 23 such wins out of the 37 wins accrued during the past three seasons.
WINNING IS WHAT WE DO
Stephen F. Austin has won ten or more games in eight of the past nine seasons, and has not finished under .500 since the 2002 season.
NO DAYS OFF
Junior defender TYLER JOHNSON has played every minute of SFA's six matches thus far, the only player on SFA's roster to have done so.
PREMIER PELICAN STATE PERFORMANCE
SFA goalkeeper MADELINE TALBOT made her first start for SFA in her home state of Louisiana last Friday against Northwestern State, holding the Demons scoreless for 90 minutes to register a clean sheet.
VIEW FROM THE TOP
SFA is in a four-way tie atop the Southland Conference standings after the opening weekend of conference play.
FAMILIAR OPPONENTS
SFA and HBU have played two of the same opponents this season in Houston and #12 Texas. SFA knocked off the Cougars 2-0 in an exhibition to start the season, while HBU bested them 3-1 to open the 2018 campaign. Both teams fell to the Longhorns, with SFA conceding five goals and HBU, four.
