HOUSTON, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin women's soccer team mustered nine shots in a 3-0 defeat at Houston Baptist on Friday, falling to 3-4 on the season and 1-1 in conference play. HBU would score the game's first goal in the 14thminute and never relinquished controlling, leading the rest of the way in the 3-0 affair.
"First off, HBU put forth a tremendous effort tonight", said SFA head coach Wally Crittenden. "They're a very good team, very athletic and they possess a great team speed. they had a great identity tonight in how they wanted to play, and certainly that challenged us. It's important that when you're in big games that ultimately you have focus, execution and discipline in how you manage the game and reduce unforced errors. There's going to be moments in each game that challenge you emotionally an physically, so you've got to be prepared to compete and fight, and certainly tonight HBU wanted it more than we did."
SFA was outshot 25-9 in the contest and 8-3 in shots on goal in the contest. Katelyn Termini notched four shots in total on the night, with one of those shots being on frame. The 'Jacks did create a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks, a season-high for the team in that category.
"The big thing for us to understand is that Friday is not related to Sunday in any way", said Crittenden. It only affects us if we choose to allow it to carry over, so its important that we improve our baseline performances and and what we expect from our kids in a competitive standards standpoint. We have to make sure we represent those values and that's where we're going to focus. There's still everything to play for moving forward, we knew we weren't going to win or lose the championship tonight, but it was a big game between two teams we expect to be in the top half of the table competing against each other."
Next up for the 'Jacks is a road contest at Texas A&M Corpus-Christi on Sunday.
"Texas A&M Corpus Christi will be a tough opponent" added Crittenden. It's the third game in a row for us to start off league play, and we know they'll give us a very strong effort. We need to establish a strong baseline of how we're going to perform in that match."
