Huskies bash four homers as 'Jacks held to five hits
HOUSTON - In its 2018 season finale, the Stephen F. Austin found itself unable to keep up with a power-hitting Houston Baptist lineup, falling 13-2 to the Huskies in eight innings at Husky Field Saturday afternoon.
Jared Martin and Manny Vasquez each went 2-for-3 at the plate, but the rest of SFA's lineup connected for just a single hit. The Huskies, meanwhile, socked four homers - two of which came courtesy of Jonathan Ducoff - and boasted three players with multiple hits.
Martin started his two-hit afternoon with a two-out single in the first before the Huskies threw their first punch in the home half of the frame. Lumberjack starter Trevor Kiminski issued three walks to HBU in the inning and the home squad turned all but one of them into runs by smacking a pair of doubles in its four-run frame. Elijah Simon capped HBU's big inning with a two-out, two-run two-bagger to right-center.
Still trailing 4-0 after three, the 'Jacks prevented an HBU shutout in the fourth after Martin led off the frame with a triple. After Josh Evans drew a walk, Skylar Black grounded into a double play that let Martin come around and cut the Huskies' lead to three.
Continuing their 11-hit assault in the fourth, the Huskies pushed their lead back to four with an RBI double by Tyler Depreta- Johnson. Down 5-1 in the bottom of the fifth, the 'Jacks watched the hosts break the game open when Jake Pulcheon belted a two-run to left which made matters 7-1.
Ducoff launched a three-run bomb off of Trayson Kubo with one out in the sixth and although Jake Georgiades' sacrifice fly in the SFA seventh cut the Huskies' lead to eight Houston Baptist knocked the 'Jacks out in the eighth.
Cole Ridgely surrendered a leadoff homer to Carey Jones before Ducoff went yard for the second time to invoke the run rule and end the game after eight innings of play.
Kiminski (2-6) worked 4.1 innings and gave up seven runs on seven hits and three walks in his collegiate curtain call. For the Huskies, Brady Batten tossed six innings of five-hit, one-run ball and struck out five to collect the victory.
Ducoff concluded his monster day at the plate with a battling line of 3-for-6 with six RBI and three runs scored. Simon and Pulcheon each drove in two runs apiece.
For SFA, Evans, Kiminski, Ridgely and Eric DeJesus each played in their final collegiate game. The 'Jacks now turn their attention to the 2019 campaign while Houston Baptist advances to the 2018 Southland Conference Tournament next week in Sugar Land, Texas.
