Offense Erupts in Ladyjacks’ 12-5 Road Victory over Texas Southern

SFA scores a season-high 12 runs on a season-best 13 hits, picks up just third road win of season
"It was a good team win on the road with some learning moments as well," head coach Nicole Dickson said following the triumph. "I feel good about this group, we are starting to put it all together at the right time. There were a lot of positives today, our goal is to get better every week and today was an awesome start going into this weekend with Lamar."
The duo of senior pitchers Makayla Sikes (Gilmer, Texas) and Callee Guffey (Waco, Texas) combined for 12 strikeouts and limited the Lady Tigers (8-5-1) to just six hits in the contest. Both teams played errorless in the field as host Texas Southern scored in just the fourth and fifth innings off of only two hits.
"Sikes had a great start and did an excellent job with a tight zone," continued coach Dickson. "Our hitters won the day, focusing on hitting hard line drives and making adjustments quickly. (Bryana) Novegil, (Taylor) Fraccastoro and (Margarita) Corona were big offensively. We did a good job of getting our leadoff batter on every inning as well as finding ways to score. Our 1-9 hitters did a quality job and we had some help off the bench with Courtney Brown and Shay Vegas."
Following two scoreless innings of action, SFA mounted a 5-0 lead in the top of the third inning. After a single up the middle from sophomore outfielder Madison Clements (Pearland, Texas) and a sacrifice bunt by freshman second baseman Bryana Novegil (Houston, Texas), senior catcher Taylor Fraccastoro (Orange, Texas) doubled to left center field to drive in the first run of the game. Moments later, freshman Katherine Thompson (Spring, Texas) singled to center field for two more scores as both Fraccastoro and junior first baseman Margarita Corona (Tucson, Ariz.) reached home. A single up the middle from senior right fielder Autumn Holloway (Cypress, Texas) made it a 4-0 game before freshman shortstop Emily Evans (Santa Fe, Texas) quickly increased the lead to 5-0 with another RBI single up the middle.
Corona then singled up the middle in the top of the fourth to allow Novegil to score, giving the Ladyjacks a sizable 6-0 advantage through four and a half innings of play.
Texas Southern scored its first run of the contest in the bottom of the fourth when catcher Marissa Padron hit an RBI single up the middle, making it a 6-1 affair. After a scoreless fifth inning by SFA, the Lady Tigers climbed within a run and made things interesting in the bottom of the frame. Two walks and single loaded the bases for Texas Southern before third baseman Madilynn Marek took a 2-2 pitch over the left field wall for a grand slam, tightening up the score at 6-5.
The Ladyjacks' offense would thrive in the final two innings of the game, scoring six runs on five hits. A four-run, four-hit sixth inning gave visiting SFA a 10-5 advantage after junior center fielder Courtney Brown (Tucson, Ariz.) knocked in a two RBI single through the right side, Corona recorded a RBI single to center field and freshman designated player Triniti Kendzior (Deer Park, Texas) rocked a RBI single to left field.
Junior Lauren Becker (Cypress, Texas) was walked to begin the seventh inning and then was brought home as Novegil tripled to right center field for an RBI. A sacrifice fly to right field by Fraccastoro allowed Novegil to score the Ladyjacks' 12th and final run of the day.
Despite the Lady Tigers getting two on in the sixth and loading the bases in the seventh with two hits and a walk, Guffey struck out five across the two innings to close out the game.
Novegil finished the contest 3-for-4 at the plate with three runs scored and an RBI, while Fraccastoro went 2-for-2 with two RBI, two runs and a walk. Corona had a 2-for-5 performance with two RBI and a run scored.
Sikes (8-5) earned her eighth win of the season after tossing four complete innings with five strikeouts. Guffey (4-5) collected her first save of the season in three innings of relief work, striking out a season-high seven batters in the process.
Texas Southern shortstop A'Leecia Bell completed the game 2-for-3 at the plate as right-hander Felicia Garza (0-1) took the loss after two and 2/3 innings in the circle.
