FRISCO, Texas - Following a week in which she played a large part in extending the nation's second-longest active winning streak, SFA volleyball freshman libero Marisabel Torres earned the title of Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Week. The league made the announcement Monday afternoon via a press release.
Hailing from Pearland, Texas, Torres was inserted into the Ladyjacks' starting lineup at libero and turned in a pair of great performances to keep SFA perfect in Southland Conference action. Last Thursday night at Southeastern Louisiana, Torres ran down a team-high 18 digs which helped SFA claim a 3-0 win over the Lady Lions in the team's first Southland road match of the season.
The defensive efforts of Torres limited Southeastern Louisiana to a team attack percentage of .008 in the match which stands as the lowest by an SFA opponent in a match this season.
Saturday afternoon in Natchitoches, La., Torres one-upped her performance from Thursday night by scooping up a match and career-best 26 digs to help the Ladyjacks claim a 3-1 victory over Northwestern State. Those 26 digs are the most by an SFA player in a single match this season and pushed SFA's record to 19-2 which includes a perfect 6-0 showing in Southland Conference action.
For the week, Torres totaled 43 digs through seven frames for an average of 6.14 digs per set. Due to her defense, SFA limited their two foes to a collective attack percentage of .073.
Torres and the rest of the Ladyjacks have just one match this week, but they'll have to take a lengthy road trip to take part in it. The only remaining Southland team without a league loss, SFA heads to the Alamo City for a Thursday night Southland showdown at Incarnate Word. First serve inside the McDermott Convocation Center has been set for 7:00 p.m.
