SFA hosted three junior colleges in scrimmages, playing six total games at SFA Softball Field
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The SFA softball team was back in action this fall hosting a trio of junior college teams and playing six total games in Nacogdoches from Oct. 5-13. In addition to early morning workouts, the Ladyjacks began their fall offseason with team practices throughout the months of September and October.
"Our team has made progress this fall," head coach Nicole Dickson said. "We have depth in the circle and more athleticism overall with this year's group. Right now, we are still coming together as a team and taking ownership in our culture. It's been fun to watch our returners develop and make strength and power gains in the weight room."
SFA welcomed Bossier Parish Community College to the friendly confines of SFA Softball Field on Friday, Oct. 5 for a doubleheader, before hosting Tyler Junior College, a program coach Dickson started, for a pair of games Saturday, Oct. 6. The Ladyjacks' final two scrimmages of their fall season were against Angelina College on Saturday, Oct. 13. This past Friday, Oct. 26, SFA held its annual black and purple intra-squad scrimmage in conjunction with family weekend as the team practiced in front of their families and participated in several fan-friendly games.
"This fall we were able to score runs from top to bottom in our lineup and we have more depth from 1-9 offensively," coach Dickson stated. "Our players are coachable and are learning to compete hard in the box and hit as a unit. On defense, we have the athleticism to work players at multiple positions and I like our competitive nature and our ability to make hustle plays."
The Ladyjacks return 11 total players and bring back nine letter winners from last season while also welcoming 12 newcomers, including six freshman and six transfers.
"I have enjoyed the additions we have made with freshmen and transfers," continued coach Dickson. "They are learning and applying our system while working hard. I like where our team chemistry is at, currently we are focused on mental toughness training to prepare our team to consistently compete at a high level in the Southland Conference against great competition and programs."
Last spring SFA posted the most victories in a single season in the past decade, reaching the 30-win plateau for just the sixth time in the program's NCAA Division I history. Tied for the 13th-largest turnaround in all of Division I softball, the Ladyjacks completed the season with a 31-24 overall record after tying for second in the final Southland standings with a 18-9 league mark. After earning the No. 2 seed for the Southland Tournament, SFA made just its second national postseason appearance by gaining the conference's automatic berth into the 2018 Postseason National Invitational Softball Championship (NISC).
Individual one-on-one sessions and team weight room training will continue for the Ladyjacks throughout the remainder of the fall before SFA hosts its first official team practice of the 2019 season Sunday, Jan. 20. The Ladyjacks' 2019 campaign will begin Friday, Feb. 8 when SFA travels to Starkville, Mississippi, to compete at Mississippi State.
