SFA plays in fifth double-overtime contest this season
NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- A pitched battle between two well-matched teams nearly went all 110 minutes of Sunday's double-overtime contest at Nacogdoches High School, but the Ladyjacks would fall to Abilene Christian by a 1-0 score in extra time.ACU's goal came three minutes into the second overtime period to end the contest. The loss drops SFA to 4-8-3 on the season and 2-5-3 in Southland Conference play with one final game left on the regular season schedule, a home affair with Sam Houston State on Friday, October 26.
"We put forth a tremendous effort today as a team", said SFA head coach Wally Crittenden. "The competitive character, the energy, the spirirt, they absolutely represented themselves at the highest level, and I will tell you that this performance is a new baseline for us from an energy and competitive standpoint. If this is who we're going to be moving forward, then I really like what I see from our team in tactics, individual roles and battles, and then of course how each unit performed as a whole. There are some option that we wish we had had to open the game up, but at the end of the day I'm proud of how our team stepped up to handle adversity going into this final game of the weekend. This one stings because we know we had chances to tilt the game in our favor, but I'm very proud of our group."
From the onset of the contest the two teams seemed evenly matched, with neither able to gain a distinct advantage over the other. The Ladyjacks were out-shot 10-15 by the Wildcats in the contest, but managed multiple dangerous chances in putting three shots on goal and a fourth off the crossbar. Carli Arthurs led the way with three shots, two of which were on frame, while Sophia Fondren took a pair of shots in the contest off of free kicks.
"Our expectation is that we go into every game expecting to give ourselves a chance to win, and we did that today", said Crittenden. "We put another shot off the crossbar, we had some good serves and crosses, some good penetration that gave us chances to be dangerous. Our expectation is that we have a good competitive identity, that we remain organize in our scheme and tactic, that we are tough to play against, and that mentally we are prepared to go the distance and compete, and all of those boxes were checked today. But just because you check all those boxes doesn't mean you always get the result, and that's frustrating. but at the end of the day it's part of the growing process and I'm pleased that we were able to check a lot of those boxes off today."
The game was a physical one, with a total of 24 fouls called (12 for either side), and a total of three yellow cards given to players.
