HAMMOND, La. – The Stephen F. Austin women's soccer team jumped in Friday's Southland Conference showdown with a first-half goal, but conceded in the second half and settled for one point earned with a 1-1 draw. With the result, SFA moves to 3-6-3 on the season and 1-3-3 in Southland Conference play, while moving to within one point of the eighth and final Southland Tournament spot.
"The product on the field was very good, we were able to outshoot them 17-8", said SFA head coach Wally Crittenden. "I thought Katelyn (Termini) and Sophia (Fondren) were both excellent tonight and did a lot of really good things for us tonight. I'm looking at our metrics and they're at or better than a lot of our metrics from last year, so we just have to keep that up and we'll get the results we're looking for."
Sophia Fondren put the Ladyjacks on the board first with a far-post goal in the 29thminute, finishing a pass from sophomore Lauren Prentice. The half was one that the Ladyjacks controlled offensively, outshooting the Lady Lions 5-1 and doing a great job in possession as well.
Despite heading into the halftime break with a solid lead, a defensive breakdown in the 60thminute allowed Southeastern Louisiana to tie up the game with a goal off the foot of Sofia Olsson. The tie score would continue till the end of regulation, leading to SFA's fourth overtime contest in five games.
In the first overtime period, the 'Jacks would muster up two shots, including one on goal, but neither side would score in the period. That trend continued in the second overtime, and a frantic final effort by the 'Jacks led to a shot by Katelyn Termini in front of goal, but the attempt was blocked by a defender to lead to a draw.
"When you're trying to battle through and grow and mature and put yourselves in a position to win games, you've got to focus and make sure that the level of play puts you in a position to convert those special moments", added Crittenden. "Our team identity is creating all the dangerous chances that demand the goalkeeper make saves, so we're pleased with the overall team performance and identity."
The Ladyjacks outshot Southeastern Louisiana 17-8 in the contest and 7-4 in attempts on goal, led by Fondren's seven attempts and Termini's four. The game was a physical one, resulting in a combined 27 fouls and a yellow card.
