NACOGDOCHES, Texas—The Stephen F. Austin women's soccer team is back on the road this weekend in Louisiana, facing a pair of Pelican State opponents in Southeastern Louisiana on Friday and Nicholls on Sunday. The Lady Lions of Southeastern enter the weekend with a 5-4-3 record and 2-2-2 conference mark, while the Colonels of Nicholls sit at the bottom of the Southland standings with a 2-11 overall mark (0-6 SLC). The Ladyjacks are 3-6-2 on the season and 1-3-2 in conference play, and need to make up some points to get back into the field for the Southland Conference Tournament at the end of the season.
Friday's contest in Hammond will be streamed live via a paid link on Lionsports.net and also at the link above. Live stats for both contests are available above as well, and can be found on the SFA Soccer schedule page.
For SFA, the level of play in recent matches has been rising, although the team has seen several of these close results not go their way. Last Friday's contest against UCA was a tightly contested affair in which the 'Jacks outshot the Bears and earned a total of nine corner kicks, only to be undone by an own goal in the 29thminute of play and miss finding paydirt themselves.
In Southeastern Louisiana, the 'Jacks will face a tough and competitive foe in what is the longest running series for SFA with a Southland opponent. SLU and SFA have faced off a total of 38 times since the 1995 season, with the 'Jacks leading the series with a 20-10-8 advantage, including wins in seven of the last nine matches with the Lady Lions. Southeastern's 10 wins against SFA are the most of any Southland foe against the Ladyjacks, however, and the rivalry's tough historical nature will continue in what is sure to be a pitched battle on Friday. Both teams need to get positive results to stay in the hunt for a tournament berth, with SLU being one game ahead of SFA in the standings.
In conference play, the Lady Lions have tallied five goals and allowed five as well, leading to one goal games or scoreless draws in every conference game this season. SLU's stingy defense and the play of Nadine Maher in net have the Lady Lions ranked second in fewest goals allowed this season in the Southland, with the team posting a very solid .874 save percentage as well. Christina Cutura leads the squad with four goals, three assists and 11 points in total, while Brogan Bernadas has chipped in three goals as well. Tilly-Hallas Potts leads the team in minutes played, with 1050, and buoys a stout back line.
After Friday's match in Hammond, the Ladyjacks will travel to Thibodaux to face the Colonels of Nicholls, who are in the midst of a seven-game slide. The 'Jacks have dominated the all-time series with the Colonels, including matchups in Thibodaux, where they are 11-1-2. A win at home for the Colonels in 2016 broke up a 22-game unbeaten streak for the 'Jacks which dated back to the 2002 season. Currently, Nicholls has allowed the second-most goals of any team in the Southland, with 24 in 13 games, and has netted just two goals in six conference matches. Forward Francesca Curteis has been the Colonel's most reliable scorer, netting six goals and owning the team lead with 13 points.
A WINNER IS WALLY
Ladyjack's head coach WALLY CRITTENDEN has compiled a 69-33-9 record (.662) during his five seasons at Stephen F. Austin, the most of any Southland coach during that span.
NO SICK DAYS TAKEN
Junior defender TYLER JOHNSON has played all 1050 minutes of the SFA soccer season thus far, leading the 'Jacks in minutes played.
WE KNOW A THING OR TWO ABOUT WINNING
SFA's marks of 157 wins and a .732 winning percentage heading into the 2018 season are both conference-bests by a healthy margin. .
WE'LL PLAY EXTRA
SFA's last three games have each gone to double overtime, resulting in two ties and a tough loss.
WELL THAT'S JUST UNLUCKY
UCA's opening goal came via an own goal by the Ladyjacks, an unfortunate double ricochet off two SFA defenders and back into net.
THOU SHALL NOT SCORE
The Ladyjacks notched a shutout in the victory over Northwestern State, and now have 23 such wins out of the 37 wins accrued during the past three seasons.
ONE FOR THE HISTORY BOOKS
SFA and Southeastern Louisiana have a storied history on the pitch, with a total of 38 matchups played between the two, most of any opponent with SFA. SLU's 10 wins against SFA are also the most of any conference opponent against the 'Jacks.
