SFA outshoots Nicholls 22-2 in road loss
THIBODAUX, La. – The Stephen F. Austin women's soccer team did everything it was supposed to do to secure three much-needed points, but was unable to convert any of its 22 shots into a goal in a 2-0 loss to Nicholls on Sunday. The Colonels, by contrast, were dormant on offense until the 70thminute, and scored on their only two shots of the contest to steal the win from SFA. The loss drops SFA to 3-7-3 on the season and 1-4-3 in conference play.
"I thought we played really well, this was probably the best weekend of soccer we've played", said SFA head coach Wally Crittenden. "In two games on the road, the quality was good in both games and we outshot both teams, just didn't win either game. When you look back at our metrics, I'd be willing to bet that they're better in both games last year."
The 'Jacks built up a heavy advantage in shots in both halves, outshooting Nicholls 11-0 in the first stanza and 11-2 in the second. Katelyn Termini led the way with eight shots, while Sophia Fondren accrued four and put two of those on frame. Breanna Moore and Katie Jennings each tallied three shots.
"The competitive intensity was good, our kids put everything they had out on the line" added Crittenden. "You could tell that in their energy, you could tell that in their urgency, it's just a shame that they don't catch a break after controlling the game for 89 minutes, and we're undone in two attacks that amount to about 60 seconds. But that's life, you do your best, you do a good job, it just doesn't always work out."
Allyson Halliday (1-5-2) took the loss in goal, replacing Maddie Talbot at the half and allowing both second half goals.
The Ladyjacks have three remaining games on the regular season schedule, all home affairs. The 'Jacks will face Incarnate Word at home this Friday before competing against Abilene Christian on Sunday afternoon. The regular season finale will be a Friday night match with rival Sam Houston State on Friday, October26.
