Comes to SFA from LaSalle University in Philadelphia, Pa.
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Stephen F. Austin head baseball coach Johnny Cardenas announced Friday the addition of Mike McCarry as the team's volunteer assistant coach for the 2018 season and beyond. McCarry will work with the 'Jacks' pitching staff.
In order to join the SFA coaching staff, McCarry traveled south from Philadelphia, Pa., where he enjoyed a four-year stint as the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator for LaSalle University. While with the Explorers, McCarry's list of responsibilities included assisting with all daily operations of the program in addition to developing the team's pitching staff.
During his final season with the Explorers in 2017, McCarry oversaw freshman Matt Holt's impressive rookie pitching campaign that saw the Suffolk, Va., product fire 59 frames and rack up 56 strikeouts over that span. Holt wrapped up the season with a 3.97 ERA and laid claim to the title of Big 5 Rookie of the Year as well as a spot on the A-10 All-Rookie Team.
Another of McCarry's pupils, Luke Reilly, earned a spot on the All-Big 5 First Team following the conclusion of the 2017 season. Those two arms helped LaSalle establish a new program strikeout record that season.
In all, four of McCarry's pitching pupils inked professional contracts during his time in Philadelphia including 2013 Houston Astros 27th-round draft pick Pat Christensen.
On the recruiting side, McCarry brought four NJCAA All-Americans to LaSalle as well as a pair of high school MLB draftees in Roy Morales (Miami Marlins, 12th round, 2008) and Yan Carlo Rivera (Toronto Blue Jays, 36th round, 2014).
Before his time at LaSalle, McCarry was involved with the MLB's Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities (RBI) program by helping inner city baseball players locate collegiate opportunities.
As a player, McCarry suited up for NCAA Division III institution Keystone College in La Plume, Pa., from 2003-05. Under the direction of head coach Jamie Shevchik, the Giants produced a 108-31 record during that span and captured the NEAC regular season crown in 2005.
He joins an SFA squad that made a second-straight trip to the Southland Conference Tournament in 2017 and finished the season with a 29-28 record.
