NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Stephen F. Austin head women's basketball coach Mark Kellogg announced the final of three new additions for the Ladyjacks for the upcoming 2018-19 season on Wednesday. Forward Aiyana Johnson (Lee's Summit, MO) will follow in the footsteps of her two older sisters and join the SFA program after the conclusion of her prep career at Lee's Summit Noth High School.
"We couldn't be more thrilled with the 2018 recruiting class. We firmly believe that these student-athletes will make our program extraordinary both on and off the court. All three of these ladies excel in all phases of their lives. The Ladyjacks definitely got better today!"
Taking the opportunity to join both her older sisters on the court, Johnson brings another multi-faceted player into the mix for SFA. The four-year varsity letter winner and two-time Coaches All-Conference First Team selection ranks fifth in career blocks, seventh in career rebounds and free throws made, 11th in career points and holds the Lee's Summit North single-season FG% record at 57.4 percent.
"Aiyana has been one of our most versatile players", said Lee's Summit Head Coach Tracy Lillygren. "While posting up with her back to the basket is her strength, she also has proven to be a very mobile on the drive and diving to the basket. Aiyana has become one of our greatest sources of energy on the floor. She continues to improve her strength in her post moves, her ability to go get rebounds, and overall ball handling under pressure. Her leadership has been integral to our team's development this off season. She is passionate about the game, our team and her bond with her teammates. We look forward to seeing how her senior year unfolds."
Aiyana will join sisters Aaliyah (currently a freshman) and Imani (a redshirt junior) as a member of the Ladyjack's program, forming a unique bond that very few student athletes get the opportunity to experience. Each of the Johnson sisters stands 6'0 or taller, giving the 'Jacks a trio of talented post players that also have the ability to work outside the paint.
"Aiyana will be the third and final member of the Johnson sisters to join our program", detailed Kellogg. "Aiyana has a unique ability to play about every position on the floor. She handles the ball extremely well for her size, she can post up to score in the paint and shoot out to the three point line. Her versatility will allow us to find matchup problems each time we take the court. She will have a rare opportunity to compete in college with her older siblings. Aiyana and her Lee's Summit North High school team only lost one game last season so she will look to make amends this season in the quest for that state title."
Aiyana has also excelled in the classroom, where she sports a 3.9 GPA and has participated in the DECA and Bronco Smart programs.
