NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Stephen F. Austin head women's basketball coach Mark Kellogg announced the first of three new signees for the Ladyjacks for the upcoming 2018-19 season on Wednesday morning. Point guard BriAnna Mitchell (Marshall, Texas) will join the Ladyjacks program at the conclusion of her prep career at Tatum High School.
"We couldn't be more thrilled with the 2018 recruiting class", said Kellogg. "We firmly believe that these student-athletes will make our program extraordinary both on and off the court. All three of these ladies excel in all phases of their lives. The Ladyjacks definitely got better today!"
Mitchell has displayed great finishing ability and an unselfish attitude on the court for Tatum High School. A First Team All-State and two-time All Region selection, Mitchell hit 119 three-pointers in her junior season and will bring an excellent shooting touch to SFA.
"Brii, is a tremendous basketball player with the ability to attack the basket with both hands" explains Tatum HS Head Coach Patricia Nelson. "Her vision on the court is simply amazing. I love how she gets her teammates involved in the game, she's the most unselfish player I have ever coached! She's a natural guard who has added a mid-range jumper and has the ability to shoot the 3 point shot. She takes pride in her defense and is determined to be great."
In addition to her skills on the court, Mitchell also possesses strong individual character, and fits well into the Ladyjacks basketball family. BriAnna has been selected to the Academic All-District team in each of the past three years.
"We have been watching Brii play basketball for several years now", said Kellogg. "We quickly realized her quickness, ball handling and her ability to make people around her was a perfect fit for our program. We have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know her family over the past couple of years and couldn't be more excited to have them join our Ladyjack program. Brii continues to elevate her game and find ways to make herself better. Brii and her Tatum High School teammates had an unbelievable year last season and we look forward to watch them chase the state championship again this year."
Mitchell has a knack for being her team's most valuable asset and stepping up in big moments, having received MVP honors at the UT Tyler Tournament, the Winona Tournament, the Rains Tournament, the Orangefield Tournament and the Frankston Tournament. She was also named the Newcomer of the Year in District 19- 4A, the District 19-4A MVP and a two-time District 16-4A MVP as well.
