SFA softball will wrap up its fall practice with the Black and Purple scrimmage Friday afternoon at the SFA Softball Field
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – After four doubleheader fall scrimmages over the last three weekends, the Stephen F. Austin softball team will take to the SFA Softball Field for its Black and Purple game Friday afternoon. Originally scheduled for 6 p.m., the intra-squad scrimmage will get underway at 4 p.m. as the Ladyjacks will play 10 consecutive innings to wrap up their fall season of practice.
Fans, students and alumni are encouraged to come out and watch the Ladyjacks in action prior to Friday night's men's and women's basketball's 'Jack Madness and homecoming weekend festivities. Admission to the Black and Purple scrimmage is free.
SFA has been preparing for its 2018 campaign with fall team practices and looks to improve on last season's 17 wins. The last weekend of September and the first two weekends of October, SFA has hosted four junior colleges for doubleheader scrimmages in Nacogdoches, including Tyler Junior College, Odessa College, Galveston College and Weatherford College.
The Ladyjacks claimed a pair of wins over Mountain West member New Mexico and earned a victory over the Big Ten's Maryland during non-conference play in 2017, but finished the season with a 9-14 Southland Conference mark. SFA returns a total of 10 letter winners from last season including senior catcher Amber Landry, an All-Southland Second Team selection, and fellow senior outfielders Autumn Holloway (Cypress, Texas) and Taylor Fraccastoro (Orange, Texas) and senior pitchers Makayla Sikes (Gilmer, Texas) and Callee Guffey (Waco, Texas). The Ladyjacks also welcome a total of 13 newcomers to their 2018 squad, including seven true freshmen and six transfers.
The 2018 spring season will get underway Feb. 9 when SFA competes in Monroe, Louisiana, taking on UT Martin and UT Chattanooga in neutral site games at 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. as part of the ULM Tournament.
