NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin softball team continues its homestand with a three-game series against Southland Conference foe Abilene Christian this weekend, using an altered schedule due to the threat of inclement weather. The teams will play two on Friday beginning at 2:00 p.m. before wrapping up the set at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday at SFA Softball Field.
The Ladyjacks took a break from league action on Tuesday for a midweek matchup with Prairie View A&M. SFA got a balanced offensive attack and great pitching from sophomore Callee Guffey to rough up the Lady Panthers by a final of 7-2.
Guffey struck out a season-high eight batters while allowing just two unearned runs in a complete 7.0 innings of work. Her effort was enough to pull out the win and improve to 7-4 on the year. Guffey leads the team and ranks seventh in the SLC this season with a stingy 2.58 ERA.
SFA jumped out to a 7-0 lead on Tuesday against Prairie View A&M with six different players driving in runs for the home team. Courtney Chambers, Alisa Hamilton, Taylor Fraccastoro, Brittany Lewis, Annie Mehringer and Taylor Vick were responsible for those RBI as the Ladyjacks got production from top to bottom of their lineup.
Senior outfielder Lindsay Campbell went a perfect 2-for-2 her last time out, reaching base safely in all three at-bats. Along with Autumn Holloway, Campbell owns a team-high four-game hitting streak since the beginning of the Houston Baptist series last weekend. She is batting .571 (8-for-14) in her last six games overall.
Another hot hitter for SFA has also been the most consistent threat in the Ladyjack lineup all season. Junior first baseman Brittany Lewis paces the ‘Jacks in just about every offensive category and sits among the league leaders in several areas as well. She currently sits third in the SLC in RBI (35), sixth in slugging percentage (.612) and eighth in home runs (7) to go along with her .345 batting average.
In the other dugout this weekend, Peyton Hedrick is leading the Wildcats with a .330 average and eight home runs in 33 games played. Expect to see Hannah Null (9-8, 3.20 ERA) and Allison Turner (4-9, 4.69 ERA) in the circle over the three-game stretch in Nacogdoches.
This season, ACU has claimed series victories over Southeastern Louisiana, Lamar and Incarnate Word while dropping two of three to both Central Arkansas and McNeese. The ‘Cats come in with a 16-17 record and a 10-5 mark in league play – the fourth-best record in the conference.
The Ladyjacks had the Wildcats’ number in 2015, picking up a three-game sweep in Abilene from April 10-11. There was no shortage of offense in the set as SFA notched 40 combined runs during the trip.
Following the upcoming series, SFA will host Houston on Tuesday, April 19 at 3:30 p.m. to conclude a five-game homestand.
