NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin softball team will participate in its fourth and final tournament of the 2016 season this weekend at the Texas Tech Invitational in Lubbock, Texas. The Ladyjacks will face UTSA, McNeese State, Texas Tech and Ohio over the three-day event, which begins on Friday morning at Rocky Johnson Field.
SFA opens tournament play against UTSA on Friday at 10:00 a.m. The Ladyjacks have already played the Roadrunners twice in 2016, splitting a pair of games at the Ole Miss Classic last weekend. SFA will then cross paths with Ohio beginning at 3:00 p.m. that afternoon.
Saturday morning’s matchup will feature a Southland Conference battle between SFA and McNeese State with first pitch slated for 10:00 a.m. It is the only scheduled contest between the two SLC programs during the regular season.
The Ladyjacks will close day two at 3:00 p.m. with a rematch with UTSA before closing the tournament on Sunday morning at 10:00 a.m. against host Texas Tech.
SFA is coming off a big victory over Texas Southern in its home opener on Tuesday afternoon. Sophomore outfielder Annie Mehringer crushed a pinch hit grand slam in the fourth inning to blow the game open as the Ladyjacks cruised to a 9-1 win in six innings. The dinger was Mehringer’s first collegiate home run.
Sophomore pitcher Makayla Sikes picked up her first win of the season against the Lady Tigers after turning in a solid 6.0 innings of work in the circle. She gave up just one run on four hits and shut TSU out over the final five frames.
Now at 5-11 on the season, SFA will try to make a push for .500 before SLC play gets underway on March 11. Only six games remain before the ‘Jacks host Nicholls on that date to start a three-game series at SFA Softball Field.
Louisiana Tech will come to town on Wednesday, March 9 for a 3:00 p.m. affair to conclude the pre-conference action.
