NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Stephen F. Austin junior guard Taylor Ross has been named the Southland Conference Player of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday afternoon. The weekly conference honor is the first of the season for the Ladyjack women’s basketball team and the second for Ross during her career.
Ross averaged 23.3 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 2.3 steals in three games during the week to help the Ladyjacks cruise past LSU-Shreveport at home on Tuesday and claim wins over SIU Edwardsville and Indiana State during the UMKC Plaza Lights Classic over the Thanksgiving weekend.
A native of Pflugerville, Texas (Pflugerville HS), Ross had a breakout game against SIUE on Friday. She scored all of her career-high 28 points in the second half to guide the Ladyjacks to a come-from-behind 82-74 victory. She sat out the majority of the first half due to foul trouble, but proved pivotal in the comeback effort. Ross also netted 20 points on Saturday afternoon against Indiana State as SFA took down the Missouri Valley foe 71-62 to finish the weekend 2-0 and win the tournament title.
Ross was named the UMKC Plaza Lights Classic MVP at the conclusion of the tournament for her outstanding play.
Ross, a 2015-16 Preseason Second Team All-SLC pick, poured in 22 points in her season debut against LSU-S last Tuesday to give her 20+ points in all three games played during the week. She is shooting 58.5 percent from the field (24-for-41) and 72.4 percent from the free throw line (21-for-29) on the year.
Ross was also recognized by College Sports Madness on Monday morning as the National Mid-Major Player of the Week.
The Ladyjacks return to action on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. when UT Arlington comes to William R. Johnson Coliseum for SFA’s annual Toys for Tots game. Fans who bring an unwrapped toy will receive free admission.
