NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin women's basketball team is set for two games up north during the Thanksgiving weekend, playing Southern Illinois-Edwardsville on Friday at 3:30 p.m. and Indiana State on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. as part of the UMKC Plaza Lights Classic. Both matchups will take place in the Swinney Recreation Center on the University of Missouri-Kansas City campus.
For the first time during the 2015-16 season due to injuries and players missing time, the Ladyjacks are expected to take the court in Kansas City with a complete array of weapons at their disposal. Dynamic guard Taylor Ross saw her first action of the year in a midweek affair against LSU-Shreveport on Tuesday night, junior shooting guard Brentney Branch is expected to be back on the court after missing the last game and junior center Adrienne Lewis continues to recover from a lingering angle injury.
With the full squad suited up, head coach Mark Kellogg and his staff will finally be able to start getting into a flow in terms of substitutions and personnel groupings.
"The primary focus is going to be on us this weekend," said head coach Mark Kellogg. "We have to find rhythm with our rotation, starting lineup, who comes off the bench, what roles certain girls are playing, that type of thing. We just haven't been able to define any of that yet based on injuries and different things. That's where we are right now.
"Not that we're not going to worry about our opponents. We're going to put together the scouting reports and have our kids prepared. We need to get going with us first though and start solidifying some different aspects of our game. It's important that we start seeing signs of improvement in certain areas."
The Ladyjacks are coming off one of the most dominating victories in program history with their 94-39 beat down of LSU-Shreveport at home on Tuesday night. The 55-point victory is the largest for the program since 1999 when SFA took care of Centenary, 99-40 (59-point margin).
With momentum on their side and the full squad back together, the Ladyjacks travel to Kansas City in good shape to face SIUE and Indiana State. Both opponents come into the year with high expectations in their respective conferences but currently have a combined 2-7 record on the year.
