ABILENE, Texas – For the fourth consecutive game, the Stephen F. Austin women’s soccer team pitched a shutout and gained three valuable points, beating Abilene Christian 2-0 at Elmer Gray Stadium on Tuesday afternoon. With just one game remaining in the regular season, the Ladyjacks sit in first place in the Southland Conference with an 8-0-2 record.
Freshman forward Breanna Moore and sophomore midfielder Madison Hall scored the goals for SFA against a Wildcat team that entered Tuesday’s affair in third place in the league standings.
With a goal in each of the Ladyjacks’ previous three games, Moore continued her goal-scoring rampage in Abilene, putting one away in the 12th minute. Hall got into great position with a penetrating drive into the heart of the box and then laid off a ball to Moore, who tucked it away perfectly in the upper left corner. Moore has scored in every game of SFA’s four-game winning streak.
The score remained 1-0 in favor of the Ladyjacks heading into the halftime break. In the 64th minute, Hall padded the SFA lead to 2-0 after rifling a direct free kick into the side netting from the top of the 18. The Arkansas transfer earned the set piece when she was fouled juking a defender just outside the penalty area. The goal represented her third of the year.
In a tough place to play so far from home, the Ladyjacks proved to be the more opportunistic side in an otherwise evenly played game. The two teams were level in several statistical categories, with ACU winning the shot battle 10-8 and holding a slim 5-4 edge in shots on goal. Outside of three combined attempts from Hall and Moore, sophomore forward Hanna Barker (3) and junior defender Kelly Ann Craig (2) also recorded shots in the game.
Goalkeepers Allyson Smith and Lillie Ehlert combined for the shutout – SFA’s fourth straight clean sheet and seventh overall on the year. Smith, a true freshman, picked up the win with three saves in the first half, including a crucial diving stop on an ACU breakaway. Ehlert collected two saves in the final 45 minutes to put the finishing touches on the victory.
Thanks in part to the goalkeeping unit, and the play of defenders Brooke Dunnigan, Julianna Echavarry, Chantal Curry, Bailey Bosley and Craig, the Ladyjacks extended their current shutout streak to over 380 minutes spanning five games. It is the longest such streak of the season.
SFA will conclude the 2015 regular season with a trip to rival Sam Houston State on Friday evening for a 6:30 p.m. match.
With 26 points and a five point lead over second place Houston Baptist, the Ladyjacks can clinch their fifth straight SLC regular season title with a win or a draw against the Bearkats.
