NACOGDOCHES, Texas – With the Stephen F. Austin men’s and women’s basketball 2015-16 season openers a little less than three weeks away, the teams will convene at First United Methodist Church at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 27 for the 2015 Jack McCullough Meet the ‘Jacks.
Tickets for the event, which is sponsored by the Nacogdoches Rotary Club, are $15 and can be purchased at the door.
Both squads laid claim to Southland Conference regular season crowns in 2014-15 and punched tickets to a pair of different postseason tournaments.
A season ago, head coach Brad Underwood cemented his teams place as one of the best squads in all of NCAA Division I basketball by leading the Lumberjacks to a record of 29-5. Led by 2014-15 SLC Player of the Year Thomas Walkup and 2013-14 SLC Player of the Year Jacob Parker, the ‘Jacks bopped Sam Houston State 83-70 in the Southland Conference Tournament championship game and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament.
The Ladyjacks experienced similar success, piling up a mark of 23-8 that included a 16-2 showing against Southland Conference adversaries. SFA bowed out of the Southland Conference Tournament in the semifinal round, but were invited to the Women’s National Invitational Tournament (WNIT) where their season came to an end at the hands of TCU.
Entering his first season at the helm of the Ladyjacks is head coach Mark Kellogg who retains the service of eight letterwinners from last season’s Southland Conference championship squad.
Friday, Nov. 13, will mark the opening day of the 2015-16 campaign for both teams. The Ladyjacks will take the floor of William R. Johnson Coliseum at 7 p.m. for a non-conference battle with UT-Tyler while the Lumberjacks take a journey to Waco for an 8:30 p.m. date with the No. 21-ranked Baylor Bears.
