NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Riding a four-game winning streak, the Stephen F. Austin softball team heads to Sam Houston State this weekend to face the rival Bearkats. The Ladyjacks climbed from seventh place in the Southland Conference up to third last week with a sweep over Lamar and are looking to clinch a spot in the conference tournament.
SFA (22-24, 12-10) are currently tied for third place with Northwestern State in the league standings and 2.5 games behind Sam Houston State (25-23, 14-9) in second. The Ladyjacks are not guaranteed a spot in the Southland Conference Tournament with a logjam behind them in the standings.
The top six teams go to the tournament, and the ninth-place team is 2.5 games behind SFA.
Saturday’s doubleheader is set for a 1 p.m. start at the Sam Houston State Softball Stadium. The series will conclude at noon Sunday as the league battles for seeding in next week’s conference tournament.
SHSU comes into the final series of the regular season with the No. 2 pitching staff in the Southland. The Bearkats have a combined ERA of 3.62.
Thanks to the efforts of senior Carlie Thomas and her four shutouts in league play the Ladyjacks are the No. 4 pitching staff. Freshman Brittany Lewis threw her first complete game shutout last week against Lamar as she and Thomas held the Cardinals scoreless twice.
