NACOGDOCHES, Texas – With a commanding second half the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks posted an 80-59 victory over Boise State in the quarterfinals of the Women’s Basketball Invitational on Saturday night. The Ladyjacks hit eight 3-pointers in the second half to pull away and keep their season alive.
SFA (22-12) will now head to Charleston, S.C. for a semifinal match at College of Charleston to be played Wednesday or Thursday.
The victory marks only the second time in school history SFA has had two postseason wins in an elimination style postseason tournament. The only other occasion was the 1996 NCAA Tournament when the Ladyjacks reached the Sweet 16. The Ladyjacks have never had three wins in a postseason tournament.
SFA trailed 34-31 at halftime but started to get hot near the end going on a 9-3 run to close the gap at the break. The Ladyjacks came out in the second half and continued to apply pressure and hit a string of 3-pointers from Tierany Henderson and Brentney Branch to reclaim the lead.
Henderson finished the night with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Branch added 10 points.
Porsha Roberts put her name atop the record books on Saturday with two blocks in the first half. With those two rejections, Roberts is now tied for the career lead in SFA history with 175.
Roberts led the Ladyjacks with 27 points, and it was the 12th time this season she reached the 20-point mark. Roberts was 8-of-14 from the field and hit 11-of-12 free throws. She also pulled down 12 rebounds to lead the team and post her 10th double-double of the season.
Boise State got 28 points from Deanna Weaver and 10 points from Miquelle Askew and Brooke Pahukoa.
The Broncos were in foul trouble for much of the night with five players registering at least three fouls.
The Ladyjacks crashed the glass to out-rebound the Broncos 54-29 and had 21 offensive rebounds lead to 24-second chance points.
