NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Stephen F. Austin senior center Porsha Roberts has been named the Southland Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday afternoon. The weekly honor is the first for Roberts this season and the second during her SFA career.
Roberts scored a game-high 29 points on Saturday evening to lead SFA to an impressive 72-60 victory over Arizona inside William R. Johnson Coliseum in the Ladyjacks’ only game of the week. The Waco, Texas native (La Vega HS) scored 21 of her 29 points in the second half to help her team pull away from the Pac-12 foe. She shot 11-for-16 (.688) from the field and went 7-for-9 from the free throw line in the contest.
Roberts came one rebound shy of her fifth double-double of the season, finishing with nine boards – five of which came on the offensive glass. Her dominance down low helped the Ladyjacks outscore the Wildcats 38-30 in the paint and 18-11 in second chance scoring – two statistical categories that proved to be the difference in the game.
Through the Ladyjacks’ first 10 games of the season, Roberts leads the team with 17.7 points and 9.0 rebounds per game while boasting a .610 field goal percentage – the eighth best mark in the country. The preseason All-SLC First Team selection also ranks among the nation’s best in several other categories, sitting 16th in offensive rebounds per game (4.5), 34th in blocks per game (2.3) and 44th in double-doubles (4).
With Roberts’ award, SFA is now the only team in the conference to have two different players earn the weekly honor this season. Sophomore guard Taylor Ross was also recognized for her outstanding play on Nov. 24.
The Ladyjacks will conclude the 2014-15 non-conference schedule when they host Southern Arkansas on Wednesday, Dec. 31 at 6:00 p.m. in William R. Johnson Coliseum. SFA begins conference play on Saturday, Jan. 3 on the road against McNeese State.
