WACO, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin women’s basketball team faces a tough road game on Sunday, Dec. 14 when they play the ninth-ranked Baylor Lady Bears inside the Ferrell Center at 2:00 p.m. It will be a homecoming of sorts for senior center Porsha Roberts. The veteran leader of the Ladyjacks is a native of Waco, Texas and played her high school ball at La Vega High School.
The matchup against No. 9 Baylor is just the second time the Ladyjacks have faced a ranked opponent in the last two seasons. Last year, SFA lost to No. 15 LSU 86-58 in the season opener. The game was played in Baton Rouge, La. on Nov. 8.
Sunday afternoon's game between SFA and Baylor will be the 21st meeting all-time between the two programs, with the Ladyjacks enjoying a 15-5 advantage in the series. The two teams haven’t played since Nov. 21, 2008 when Baylor thumped SFA 77-42 in Waco. The last win for SFA in the series came in 1996 on the road by way of a 96-73 decision. Of the Ladyjacks’ 15 wins in the series, 11 came before 1980.
SFA will have its hands full trying to stop a potent Baylor offensive attack. The Lady Bears rank second in the country in both scoring offense (91.2 ppg) and field goal percentage (.502) while leading the nation in scoring margin (+35.6). The squad also swarms the glass and ranks fourth nationally in rebound margin (+16.4). Baylor is led by sophomore forward Nina Davis who averages 22.1 ppg and 7.7 rpg through eight games this season. She scored 43 points on Dec. 7 at Ole Miss en route to Big 12 Player of the Week honors. Baylor’s only loss this season came on the road against No. 8 Kentucky on Nov. 17.
Despite the tough challenge that Baylor presents, SFA has also been playing good basketball as of late. The Ladyjacks are coming off a solid team victory in Houston against Rice on Dec. 6. The win marked the first true road win of the season for the Ladyjacks and the first win on the road against Rice for the SFA senior class. The Ladyjacks trailed by as many as 12 in the first half but a 14-point second half effort from Porsha Roberts and 21 total points from Taylor Ross helped propel SFA to the 70-59 victory.
For the first time this season, the Ladyjacks will appear on local television. The game will be televised on FOX Sports Southwest with John Morris on play by play and Jim Haller providing the color commentary.

Ross made her first seven shots from the floor and had 19 points on 9-for-11 shooting at the half, helping SFA take a 38-31 lead into the break. SFA couldn’t hold off LA Tech in the end as the Lady Techsters went on an 11-2 run to end the game and steal the victory in the season opener, 76-69.
• Preseason Favorites – The Ladyjacks were picked as the Southland Conference favorite in both the preseason coaches’ and sports information directors’ poll. SFA grabbed 11 first-place votes and 142 points in the coaches’ poll and nine first-place votes and 137 points in the SID poll en route to a consensus selection to win their 17th conference championship in program history. The Ladyjacks’ collection of 16 trophies is the largest in the SLC by 11.
