NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Stephen F. Austin sophomore guard Taylor Ross has been named the Southland Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday afternoon. It is the first such honor in her young career as a Ladyjack.
Ross continued her hot start to the 2014-15 season with two more 20-point performances to lead SFA to victories over Prairie View A&M and the University of Louisiana at Monroe last week. Ross, who has scored at least 23 points in all three games for the Ladyjacks this year, began the week by pouring in 24 points against PVAMU on 8-for-15 shooting to help her team come away with an 83-73 win on Tuesday, Nov. 18. She followed that effort up with 23-point showing on Friday, Nov. 21 as SFA cruised to an 82-54 victory over ULM. The Pflugerville, Texas native set career-highs in free throws made (12) and assists (8) in that contest.
Besides scoring and helping her teammates score, Ross took extremely good care of the basketball during the week, committing just three turnovers. With her 12 total assists over the two games, Ross boasted a 4.0 assist to turnover ratio on the week.
“For Taylor to be as aggressive as she is and have as few turnovers as she does, I think is something that is a real positive for us,” said head coach Brandon Schneider. “Right now she’s making some really good decisions. She also typically has the toughest defensive assignment on the floor. Her play is something that we’re going to rely on consistently. We’re not asking her to go get 24, 25 points a night, but if that’s what’s there I know she’s willing to take advantage of it.”
Overall, Ross averaged 23.5 points per game while shooting 50 percent from the field and knocking down 19 of 21 free throws during the week to help SFA earn its first two wins of the season. Ross leads the team in scoring (24.3 ppg), assists per game (5.7) and steals per game (2.0) this year.
SFA will have one more home game at William R. Johnson Coliseum in the four-game home stretch to begin the season. The Ladyjacks host St. Edwards on Tuesday, Nov. 25 before flying to Albuquerque, N.M. for the University of New Mexico Thanksgiving Classic from Nov. 28-29.
