NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Stephen F. Austin head women’s basketball coach Brandon Schneider has announced a restructuring of his support staff, effective for the 2014-15 season. Todd Stutzman will serve as the Director of Basketball Operations and Shane Akin will be the new graduate manager for the Ladyjacks.
Stutzman will handle the day-to-day operations of the program this season. He will play an integral role in many behind the scenes responsibilities including team travel, community outreach, gear and equipment, and organizing summer basketball camps.
“Operationally, Todd is critical in organizing not only our office but also all of our team travel,” Schneider said. “Day-to-day he’s really the point person and it really allows me to focus on basketball and recruiting. It’s great to have a person that’s so loyal and that we trust so much in that position.”
Stutzman is in his third season with SFA women’s basketball, joining the staff for the 2012-13 season. He started as a graduate assistant for the team and most recently served as video coordinator during the 2013-14 season.
Prior to coming to SFA, Stutzman spent one year as a graduate assistant manager at the University of Memphis. His primary responsibilities for the Tigers included assisting with day-to-day operations, organizing and assisting with film exchange, cutting and editing film, assisting with scouting opponents, helping with practices and supervising summer basketball camps.
Before arriving in Memphis, Stutzman earned his bachelor's degree in liberal arts and sciences with a minor in business from The University of Kansas in 2011. During his time at KU he was a student manager for the women's basketball program from 2009-11. Stutzman completed a summer internship with the KU athletic department in equipment management and was a camp supervisor with Bill Self Basketball Camps in 2011. He also received an associate of arts degree from Hesston College (Kan.) in 2008.
A native of Hesston, Kansas, Stutzman attended Hesston High School where he was a three sport letterman for the Swathers. He recently completed his Master's of Interdisciplinary Studies degree from SFA.
Joining Stutzman in a new role this year, Akin will oversee the video and analytics side of the women’s basketball program as a graduate manager. He will assist the staff with film exchange, cutting and editing film for scouting purposes and other day-to-day operations.
“Shane has tremendous work ethic and a great desire to learn, not only about basketball but every phase of what goes on in operating a college basketball program,” said Schneider. “When it comes to video and scouting, he understands how critical that phase of the program is and he’ll do a terrific job with that.”
A Chapel Hill, Texas native, Akin started his work with the Ladyjacks as a student manager for the 2011-12 season and held the position for three years. He was responsible for filming practices and games and also helped with numerous day-to-day operations.
Akin graduated from SFA in 2014 and majored in kinesiology.
