NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Student-athletes from the Stephen F. Austin women's basketball team paid a visit to Raguet Elementary Friday morning to speak about the importance of education and teamwork.
"We want to show the importance of being positive role models, especially for young kids." head coach Brandon Schneider said. "I think any opportunity we have to give back to the community that has been so supportive of the Ladyjacks for a long period of time, is something we are going to take advantage of and are happy to do."
SFA teammates Antionette Carter, LaNesha Middleton, Daylyn Harris and Tierany Henderson, spoke on the importance of academics, teamwork, work ethic and striving for a college education.
Raguet Elementary is actively promoting a comprehensive model of college readiness to all students from PreK-5th grade. The Ladyjacks helped partake in the Jump Start Program, which is designed to expose students to powerful college symbolism. This symbolism is seen in the college flags and banners hung on every door, felt through the close partnerships forged between classrooms and universities, and heard in the college chants that exist at each grade level.
Women's basketball joined the SFA football team, who stopped by earlier in the week, in the initiative.
The Ladyjacks have also recently volunteered at GODTEL Ministries, a Christian-based organization in the area, serving dinner to those less fortunate.
