HOUSTON, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks have posted two wins this season after trailing with five minutes remaining in play. A third comeback was almost completed on Sunday against Kent State, but the go-ahead bucket would not fall in the closing minutes for the Ladyjacks, as they fell 54-52.
SFA had a chance to tie and take the lead in the closing minutes, but a shot by Daylyn Harris would not fall with SFA down 52-51. From there, the Golden Flashes would make free throws, and SFA would miss a Kali Jerrell 3-pointer to win the game following a free throw by Harris.
SFA (3-4) dropped the game after leading 30-28 at halftime thanks to a strong 11-0 run to close the half and claim the lead.
Kent State (2-5) jumped to a 7-point lead late in the second half, but the Ladyjacks were able to quickly erase that deficit as well with another run. SFA tied the game at 48-48 and could not take the extra step to reclaim the lead late in the game. Instead, Kent State used free throws to pull ahead and hold off the Ladyjacks.
Harris led the Ladyjacks with 19 points for her season-high and just shy of her career-best of 21. She also pulled down six rebounds and was 6-of-8 at the free-throw line. Tierany Henderson hit three clutch 3-pointers for SFA to post nine points.
A day after Porsha Roberts posted a double-double and scored 21 points, she was limited to just four points and six rebounds.
It was Kent State that established a presence inside, out-scoring SFA 22-10 in the paint. Montia Johnson tallied 15 points and 12 rebounds for the Golden Flashes to lead the way to the win over the Ladyjacks.
SFA shot only 25.9 percent (7-of-27) in the second half and made only one basket in the paint to play a role in the loss.
The Ladyjacks will return to action on Wednesday night for a mid-week nonconference match at TCU. SFA and the Horned Frogs will tip at 7 p.m. from Fort Worth. Fans can follow the action online with live stats at sfajacks.com. Updates will also be available on Twitter by following @SFA_WBB
