Ladyjacks Comeback Falls Short

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Ladyjacks opened their home schedule on Friday night taking on the Stetson Hatters in the consolation bracket of the Preseason Women’s NIT and fell in a tightly contested match 84-77. Stephen F. Austin trailed by 13 points with just under 14 minutes to play and went on a run to pull within a point and push the Hatters back on their heels but could not capitalize down the stretch to complete the comeback.
Porsha Roberts led the Ladyjacks (0-2) with 22 points and pulled down seven rebounds. She was an impressive 8-of-11 from the field and hit 6-of-9 free throws. Brittney Matthew and Daylyn Harris joined Roberts in double figures with 10 points apiece. Matthew also led the team in assists with four.
The Ladyjacks were a force again on the inside with 36 points in the paint. They also won the battle on fast breaks as SFA scored 13 points on the break. The difference in the contest came in points off turnovers and the offensive glass.
Stetson (1-1) pulled down five more offensive rebounds than SFA and tallied 16 second chance points to SFA’s nine. The Hatters also outscored SFA on points off turnovers by a mark of 21-14 despite Stetson committing three more turnovers than the Ladyjacks.
The Hatters were led in scoring by Sasha Sims with 23 points. She shot 9-of-14 and contributed eight rebounds. Point guard Jama Sharp posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 assists.
The portion of the consolation bracket of the Preseason WNIT hosted by the Ladyjacks will conclude on Saturday to close an exciting weekend of Ladyjacks action. The women will take on Georgia State at 4 p.m. from William H. Johnson Coliseum. Stetson will face North Carolina A&T at 6 p.m. after NC A&T defeated Georgia State 74-49 on Friday night.
