NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks basketball team will make its home debut this season on Friday night as the Stetson Hatters come to town for the Preseason Women’s National Invitational Tournament’s consolation bracket. SFA and Stetson will tip at 7 p.m. from William R. Johnson Coliseum as North Carolina A&T (0-1) and Georgia State (0-1) will tangle prior at 5 p.m.
SFA (0-1) and Stetson (0-1) have never faced each other in women’s basketball and the Ladyjacks will have a strong opponent to face. The Hatters posted a school-record 24 victories last season and went to the NCAA Tournament as a 14-seed, the highest in school history. The Ladyjacks are looking to rebound from a loss to SEC power and No. 15-ranked LSU to open the season.
The Ladyjacks were picked as the preseason favorite to win the Southland Conference with a solid core of returning players to the hardwood. Junior center Porsha Roberts and senior forward Antionette Carter were both selected to the Preseason All-Southland Conference Team with Roberts receiving first team honors.
Friday’s games open an exciting weekend of women’s basketball action on campus at SFA with the losers of the two matchups set to play each other on Saturday at 4 p.m. The two winners of contests on Friday will face off at approximately 6 p.m. following that contest.
SFA has faced Georgia State twice in the history of the program with the most recent contest coming during the non-conference portion of the 2004-05 schedule. The Ladyjacks won that game 61-56. SFA also won the first game between the Ladyjacks and the Panthers in the 1981-82 season opener, 83-74.
Tickets will be sold at the door for this weekend’s action.
