CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Junior forward Chelsea Raymond scored her 39th goal of her career to become Stephen F. Austin's all-time goal leader, as the Ladyjacks clinched no worse than a share of their third consecutive Southland Conference title in a 5-0 statement win over first-year program Texas A&M - Corpus Christi Friday afternoon at Dugan Stadium.
Raymond's record-breaking goal came in the ninth minute of play on an assist from fellow junior Zuri Prince. The goal proved to be the game winner, as SFA (15-3-1, 10-1-0 SCL) shutout the Islanders (2-15-0, 1-10-0 SLC) to record their 13th blanking of the opponent to tie the school record.
"What a great result today on the road," head soccer coach Wally Crittenden said. "The girls came out knowing what was on the line and absolutely delivered one of their best performances. I was very pleased with our commitment to possession, as well as our ability to feature different players on each goal. Anytime we have five different people score, it is evident we have established great depth and a well balanced attack. We are hitting our stride at a really exciting time and I cant wait to see what the team presents on Sunday as we play for a conference championship."
The five goals is the most scored this season and most against a league opponent since SFA scored six in a 6-0 shutout of Central Arkansas in 2011.
The Ladyjacks also got goals from Brenda Salazar (12:32), Amanda Fox (43:33), Dallas Brown (59:02) and Rachel Owens (73:29), as they blistered TAMUCC with 18 shots in the match. SFA outshot the Islanders 18-6 and held an 11-2 advantage in shots on goal. The Ladyjacks also led in corners 6-1, while only having to make two save on goal. The goals for Fox and Brown were the first of their careers.
Raymond's goal gave SFA a 1-0 lead at 8:45, before Salazar and Fox built the lead to 3-0 at the break. In the second half, Brown and Owens added two more goals as the stout defensive play of the Ladyjacks held on for the shutout.
Junior goalkeeper Morgan Glick improved to (6-1-1) and senior Lacey Lee made two saves in the second half, including one on a penalty kick, to protect the shutout.
With one regular season game remaining, SFA will close its SLC schedule on the road at Incarnate Word with a win securing the outright title and third consecutive for the program. The Ladyjacks will take on the Cardinals for the first time in program history on Sunday, Nov.3.
