NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Seniors Lacey Lee, Melissa Gaudet, Brenda Salazar and Megan Wasiak, played their last home game of their careers in front of 947 fans, but the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks came up short in a 2-0 loss to No. 25 Texas Friday on Senior Night at the SFA Soccer Field.
SFA (13-3-1) was shutout for just the second time this season, also tying Houston (Aug. 30), as the nationally ranked Longhorns improved to 12-4-2 overall in the non-conference finale for both teams.
"This was a great game for our team to experience at this point in the season," head coach Wally Crittenden said. "You always want to win, but you also want to play well and represent yourself consistent with how you train. We did that tonight. We approached and prepared for UT in a manner consistent with how we will prepare moving forward toward postseason play. I was extremely proud of the commitment to our gameplan and our ability to control major parts of the game. At this level, set pieces define games and even seasons. Texas got a goal early off of a corner and it was a great moment for them for sure. We responded instantly and were able to create some really dangerous moments all throughout the remaining 80 minutes or so and that is exciting.
"As for our seniors, what a special group of young people. They have all made a major impact on the team and have left a lasting mark on the program. They each should hold their heads high and acknowledge the special careers they have been able to enjoy. Now, we get ready to get back into the conference race with a great test on the road on Sunday verse a motivated Central Arkansas team."
Lee (8-2) picked up just her second loss of the season, surrendering one goal and making three saves in the first half. Junior Morgan Glick also surrendered one goal in the second half of the match.
The Ladyjacks outshot UT 16-12 and 7-5 in shots on goal. The seven saves made by Longhorn goalkeeper Abby Smith was a career high, as she recorded her eighth shutout of the season.
Senior Gabby Zarnegar scored the game-winning goal for UT on a header off a corner kick from junior Sharis Lachappelle in the sixth minute of play. The goal was the second of the season for Zarnegar and came on the first corner kick of the match.
The Longhorns added one more goal in the 68th minute from freshman Julia Dyche, the first of her career, on a loose ball in the box.
SFA will look to amend for the loss, traveling to Central Arkansas for a 1:00 p.m. tilt with the Sugar Bears Sunday Oct. 27.
