NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack softball team will look to build off their walkoff 2-1 victory over UT-Arlington this past weekend when they travel to Baylor Wednesday for a doubleheader against the No. 17 Bears.
The twin bill is a makeup of the scheduled doubleheader that was rained out on March 20. It was originally supposed to be madeup on Tuesday, April 3 but has now been moved to Wednesday due to inclement weather.
SFA (9-21, 2-6) split their previous weekend series against the Mavericks, dropping the Friday game 2-0 before winning in dramatic fashion on Saturday, 2-1. In that contest, freshman Kaitlyn Mixon won the game with a walkoff RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning to plate Elizabeth Arana from second base.
That victory snapped a four-game losing streak for the Ladyjacks and kept the team just two games behind sixth-seeded Nicholls State.
The No. 17 Bears (22-12, 1-6) have lost four straight games entering play on Tuesday, including a three-game sweep at the hands of Missouri this past weekend. Baylor is led by a strong pitching staff that boasts the fourth-best ERA (1.63) in the Big 12, anchored by junior Whitney Canion (5-1, 0.35 ERA) and Courtney Repka (10-6, 1.43 ERA).
Offensively Baylor is second to last in the Big 12 in batting average (.253) and runs (107) and are last in homeruns (5). Junior Kathy Shelton leads the Bears with a .375 batting average and is second in the Big 12 with 18 stolen bases.
