HOUSTON, Texas - SFA struggled to find offense in an 8-1 loss against No. 8 Michigan Saturday on Day 2 of the Hilton Houston Plaza Invitational. The Ladyjacks' second game of the day against Southern Illinois was postponed due to technical issues with the outfield lights.
In the first game, Michigan starter Stephanie Speierman took a no-hitter into the fifth inning before giving in for three hits and a run over the final three frames in an 8-1 Ladyjack (0-2) loss.
The Wolverines had a 4-0 lead by the time Jessica Arana singled to left with one out in the bottom of the fifth to break up the no-hitter. Michigan countered with four more runs in the sixth on a grand slam by Ashley Lane.
Lacy Liles doubled to left field to lead off the bottom half for SFA. She took third on a wild pitch, then came home on a base knock by Amber Price.
Monika Covington started and worked the first five innings. She gave way to reliever Angela White one at-bat after the grand slam in the sixth. Covington (0-1) was charged with eight earned runs on 12 hits and six walks. She struck out one. White worked the sixth and seventh without giving up a hit.
SFA will take on Southern Illinois at 9 a.m. Sunday, then face tournament host Houston at 1 p.m.
