FRISCO, Texas - Stephen F. Austin senior guard Tammara Marion was named the Southland Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.
Marion scored a team-high 20 points, including a game-tying shot with 0.9 seconds remaining in regulation, to help the Ladyjacks defeat Rice, 68-64, in overtime. The Houston, Texas (Bellaire H.S.), native hit 6-of-15 from the floor, including 2-of-5 from behind the arc, and was a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line to lead a Ladyjack 10-point comeback in the game's final four minutes. Marion also recorded four rebounds, two assists and one steal in the contest.
Honorable mention this week goes to Texas State sophomore forward Ashley Ezeh, Nicholls State senior guard Sumar Leslie, Central Arkansas junior guard Megan Herbert and Sam Houston State junior forward Sequeena Thomas. To receive honorable mention, a player must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland men's basketball sports information directors.
Each school's sports information director nominates and votes for the players of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his own player.
The Ladyjacks (9-2) will hit the hardwood again Friday, Dec. 30 when they travel to Dallas to take on the SMU Mustangs at 7 p.m. The game can be heard on the radio on Q107.7FM.
