FOR STARTERS
SFA has started a season 3-0 for the first time since the 1998-99 season and the 11th time in school history. The Ladyjacks have been relying on balanced scoring so far and have four players averaging 8.0 ppg or higher: Courtney Conwright (9.7), Amina Sawyer (9.3), Porsha Roberts (8.7) and Tammara Marion (8.0).
LAST TIME OUT
The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks survived quite the scare Saturday evening at William R. Johnson Coliseum, holding off a feisty Wiley College Lady Wildcats by the final of 59-57. SFA (3-0) was led by their two post players, Amina Sawyer and Porsha Roberts, both of whom collected double-doubles. Sawyer scored a team and game-high 15 points and grabbed 15 rebounds while Roberts recorded the first double-double of her career with 11 points and 15 rebounds. SFA forced the Lady Wildcats into 31 turnovers of which they scored 26 points off of.
THE EAGLES
Alabama pulled away with an 18-0 run in the first half and defeated Georgia Southern 67-34 at Foster Auditorium on Monday night. The Lady Eagles dropped to 1-3 overall while the Crimson Tide moved to 4-1 on the season. vs
vs GEORGIA SOUTHERN/vs SOUTHERN MISS/vs JACKSONVILLE ST.
Saturday marks the first ever meeting between SFA and Georgia Southern. SFA is 3-0 all-time against Southern Miss and 1-0 versus Jacksonville State.
RECORD WATCH: With one more made three-pointer on versus Wiley College, senior guard Tammara Marion is on the verge of becoming the all-time three-point leader in SFA history. Marion is just one three-pointer behind Dayna Redd’s all-time mark of 178. Last season Marion led SFA with 78 made shots from beyond the arch.
SAWYER HAS CAREER NIGHT: Senior forward Amina Sawyer had the best game of her career last Saturday against Wiley College, putting up career highs in both points (15) and rebounds (15), including 10 offensive rebounds. She went 5-of-9 from the floor and 5-of-8 at the free throw line while collecting 3 steals. For her career Sawyer has averaged 4.2 ppg but she is averaging 9.3 so far this season.
MARION LOOKING TO FIND RHYTHM: Perhaps the biggest surprise of the season so far is the fact that SFA is 3-0 despite preseason first-team selectee Tammara Marion strugglng to find a groove offensively. Although she is averaging 8 ppg, Marion is shooting just 15 percent (6-of-38) from the field. Marion is a career 37 percent shooter from both the floor and three-point territory.
CRASHING THE GLASS: The Ladyjacks are the number one ranked team in the Southland Conference in offensive rebounding after their monster performance against Wiley College, when they pulled down 41 offensive rebounds to push their overall season rebounding margin average to a +15.
