SFA Weekly Release
The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team (11-9/6-3 SLC) will be looking for its third victory in its last four games, as well as exacting a little revenge on Northwestern State when they travel to Natchitoches, La. Wednesday. The Lady Demons are 12-9 (.571) on the season, and third in the SLC East with a 5-3 (.625) record. The game against Northwestern State is slated to begin at 7 p.m. from Prather Coliseum. The Ladyjacks will be in Lake Charles, La. Saturday afternoon to take on McNeese State. The Cowgirls (6-15/2-6 SLC) have dropped two straight, and seven of their last eight heading into the week. Saturday's contest is slated to begin at 2 p.m. from Burton Coliseum.
SFA vs. the Lady Demons: The Ladyjacks are 45-18 (.714) all-time against Northwestern State. SFA has won four of the last six contests, but the Lady Demons have won two of the past three meetings. Northwestern State is coming off a 68-64 win over the Ladyjacks last month.
800-Win Club: The Ladyjacks became the sixth member of an exclusive club with their 73-40 victory over Sam Houston State in 2007-08. SFA became only the sixth women's program in NCAA Division I history to record 800 wins. The Ladyjacks joined Tennessee, Louisiana Tech, Old Dominion, Texas and James Madison as the only schools to ever accomplish the feat. Making the victory more special was the fact that it was Sue Gunter Day on the SFA campus. Tennessee Tech also joined the 800-win club last season.
Tradition of Winning: The SFA Ladyjack basketball program has been one of the most dominant programs in women's basketball history. The Ladyjacks are among the nation's all-time top 10 with 832 wins. The Ladyjacks are also among the all-time top 10 with a .714 winning percentage (832-334).
Tradition of Winning in the SLC: As dominant as SFA has been nationally, they have been just as strong in the Southland Conference. The Ladyjacks are the conference's most successful team, compiling a 314-65 (.828) all-time record. SFA has won 15 of a possible 22 SLC tournament titles and 14 regular-season titles. SFA has also recorded four undefeated seasons in league play and has had 54 players named All-SLC.
Riley vs. the SLC: Ladyjack head coach Lee Ann Riley has compiled an impressive record against Southland Conference foes. Riley is 99-46 (.683) against SLC teams during the regular season.
Ladyjack Academic Shootout: The annual Ladyjack Academic Shootout is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 20, when SFA hosts Southeastern Louisiana. Fans can pledge a certain amount per point, or a flat rate. The money goes to support the Ladyjacks' summer school scholarship fund. A pledge will be set up at the front gate of the coliseum prior to every home game.
Millennium Club: Wednesday evening senior Whitney Cormier joined an exclusive club. With her ninth point against Nicholls, Cormier became the 24th Ladyjack in school history with 1,000 career points. Cormier now has 1,032 points in her career.
One for the Record Books: The Ladyjacks knocked down a school record 13 three-threes Saturday against Lamar. The 13 triples breaks the old record which has been set five times in program history, including three previous times this season.
20-Something: Senior Whitney Cormier netted a season-high 25 points against Lamar. It marks the third time this season that she has scored at least 20 points in a game.
Long Range Bomber: Senior Whitney Cormier has worked on her range in her final season as a Ladyjack. After recording only 13 threes in first three seasons on campus, Cormier has recorded 30 triples this season. She is shooting 30-of-76 (.395) from beyond the arc as a senior.
Career Highs: Sophomore Tammara Marion recorded a career-high 20 points, and pulled down a career-high eight rebounds Wednesday at Nicholls. She just missed tying a career high with her four assists against the Colonels.
Double-Double: Junior Ebony Alexander recorded her third double-double of the season with her 14-point, 11-rebound outing against Lamar.
Crashing the Boards: Although scoring has not come easy for junior Toni Davis in the team's past two games, she hasn't let that affect her rebounding. She has grabbed 10 rebounds in each of the last two games. She has recorded double-figure rebounds six times this season.
Arc Angels: SFA enters the week with 146 triples with seven games still remaining. The Ladyjacks rank 27th in the nation averaging 7.3 threes per contest. The Ladyjack single-season record of 179 was set during the 2005-06 season. SFA needs to average 4.7 threes per game the rest of the way to break the current mark.
Like a Thief in the Night: The Ladyjacks have produced one of the most dominating defenses in the country this season. The Ladyjacks are currently ranked 17th in the nation averaging 11.3 steals per game. SFA is also ranked among the nation's top 20 in turnover margin (5.60).
Need Assistance: Junior point guard Ebony Alexander is currently tied for the league lead in assists (5.8 pg). She is currently ranked 14th in the nation in that category.
Up Next ... The Ladyjacks will be back in action Saturday, Feb. 20th, when they return home to host Southeastern Louisiana. The game against the Lady Lions is slated to begin at 6 p.m. from the William R. Johnson Coliseum. The game will also serve as the Ladyjack Academic Shootout.
